Breastmilk

so I exclusively pump and so along with that I have a ton of milk in the freezer.  I haven't checked latly how much ounces it is but its a lot (or I at least feel like it is).  My goal is to pump until he is 1 year old but since I have so much milk saved I'm wondering if I could get away with stop pumping when LO is 8 months or something?  How would I figure out if I would have enough?  I don't know this is maybe a dumb question and maybe I should post it on the breastfeeding form?
Thanks in advance, and hopefully this makes sense--it was a rough night so I'm on the verge of sleeping :(

Re: Breastmilk

  • Since you know how much your baby eats you can easily calculate how much you need saved up.  Since babies drink around 25 oz a day (approx, and all babies are different) thats about 175/week. And then go from there with your calculations.

  • It should be easy enough, but you probably can't necessarily do the math now at 3-4 months, because baby might eat a bit more later on.  But you can probably get close.

You EP, so you give bottles for every feeding, so you know almost exactly how much LO eats a day right?  So if he eats, let's say, 7 times a day (that's where my LO is now) and approximately 4 ounces at a feeding, that's 28 ounces a day.  Times 30 days (average) in a month, is 840 ounces a month.  So if you want to stop pumping at 8 months and make it to a year with breast milk, you need about 840 x 4, which is 3360 ounces, saved up.  Holy shit.

Yikes!  :)  Okay thanks so much for your feedback! :)  and yes I will definitely have to just see where we are at about 6 months.
  • Once your baby starts eating solids, he'll nurse less frequently but that's a gradual change. By 10 mos I'd say my first was just nursing in the AM and before naps and bedtime. Although I'm not sure how many oz that was...

I completely understand wanting to stop early. I pumped the two days I work away from home and it drove me nuts. I have so much respect for people who EP.

  • I agree with @Justnooch . DD was BFing considerably less once we started BLW. I would say we were down to eating about every 4 hours at 8 months and towards 10 moths to a year we doing 4 feedings a day, normally breakfast, nap time, bedtime, and one night feeding.
