Im seeing an internal fetal medical doctor for the first time tomorrow. I was pre diabetic before getting pregnant. Just wondering what to expect.
thanks
A doctor in maternal fetal medicine will do a lot of early testing to see if you have gestational diabetes. Since you were borderline before, the chances of you devleoping GD are high. With my first pregnancy I had to do a lot of preliminary tests which included a 24 hour urine collection (they give you a jug and you have to collect your pee for 24 hours) and several blood draws where I had to go to the lab before eating, get my blood drawn, go home and eat breakfast and go back for another draw in two hours.
Then around 12-13 weeks they went ahead and did the one hour GTT to test for GD (you drink a sugary drink and get your blood tested an hour later). I failed that so then I did a 3 hour, failed that and was diagnosed with GD.
Even if you pass the early tests, they'll make you do them again at least once, maybe twice more to make sure you don't develope it later in pregnancy. They'll also ask you about your family history. It's a lot more testing than if you didn't have risk factors, but for the most part they are no big deal.
