overfeeding? barfs?

Ok, I'm plenty frustrated and a little sad for LO this morning.

I've been mostly pumping/supplementing formula for LO this week as part of a routine intended to finally get him back to birth weight. (I do produce milk, just not tons, and LO was either falling asleep or goofing around/getting mad at the boob more than actually getting food from it.)

He'll drink a solid 2 ounces from a bottle but then often still acts hungry - so I'll feed him a bit more or let him have go at breast feeding - my fear though is that he's over-doing it on his little tummy or feeding too fast, because every few feedings he'll barf it all back up! Like not a little spit-up. A big gush of vom. And then he's hungry again!

I've done some research. Some people say that yes, it's totally possible to overfeed your baby by accident, (they'll just keep sucking away or not feel full fast enough) but others claim no, it's totally impossible, your baby will stop drinking when he's full, and not before, so he's spewing for some other reason. (LO has no symptoms of being sick.. He's happy and perky as usual.)

I'm so confused!! Actual moms with experience: do you think I'm just letting him go too hard and accidentally overfeeding? If I see one more precious bottle of hard-earned breast milk land all over my clothes or on the couch instead of in his tummy where it belongs, there's going to be one hell of an ugly cry happening here, and it won't be from the baby.

Re: overfeeding? barfs?

  • If LO is eating fast he won't know he is full right away and then he could over eat and throw up. Have you tried pacing his bottle feeds? Milk comes out of a bottle nipple much quicker than the breast. I have to pace my LO's bottles otherwise he would gulp down 3oz in a matter of minutes and think he is still hungry and/or get a tumny ache.

  • My baby does this too! But she always drinks 3oz. Of milk. Sometimes she barfs it all up and sometimes she doesn't. So I have no clue! I don't think it's over feeding, I feel that when I try to burp her too fast it happens. I am now trying to feed her, then let her rest on my arm for 5 min. And then burp her, so that her tummy has a little more time to digest the milk.
  • We've had this issue the past few nights.  I don't know if it's due to overeating or reflux.  I've been trying to make sure he burps before I lay him down and keep him upright a little longer. Has anyone used the wedge to keep LO's head elevated?

  • We've been having this problem and it is reflux for us. LO does have other symptoms of reflux though...spitting up acid only even when not feeding, cueing for food and then screaming in pain after 2 sucks, etc. that's not to say that they MUST have a second symptom but if you try what PP have recommended and it still happens id check with your pedi about reflux.

  • I think they can overeat. Mine have done it once or twice. But I am also wondering if maybe there is a dairy allergy going on? My friends DS has a severe dairy allergy but it wasn't evident right off with a "normal" allergic reaction. Their first sign was that he was throwing up all the time but no signs of reflux or anything else. It may be worth mentioning to the pedi and asking about trying a soy based formula instead.
