Anyone's LO have asthma and use inhaled steroid?

Just curious how old LO is and what brand?my dd has had a reactive airway type cough and symptoms with her last few colds and this time it is more pronounced w the cold air and exertion so we are starting on inhaled steroids and albuterol as needed to see if we can get her feeling better for awhile..went to pick up the inhalers and found out the qvar is $140 after insurance. They are going to call and see if pedi wants to rec anything else in place of it in the morning but I am wondering if there are not many options at that age (4.5). Also I had asked if we would get something once daily but was asking more bc she is in full time preschool and I didn't want something they'd have to give her every day like a three times daily type prescription, so I don't know if that is why they gave the qvar over another brand...? I would be fine with twice daily if there is a huge price difference....any thoughts?

  • Thanks...I imiagine the nebulizer solution is prob a bit cheaper than inhalers...? Not sure since MH picked up the prescription for our albuterol solution when we got it for nebulizer...

  • We haven't graduated to the inhalers yet but we probably will so I am interested in the response. DS also has a very reactive airway. We currently treat as allergies with Zyrtec and a nebulizer as needed but it is getting harder to control.
  • My DS (3.5) was given a script for pulmicort for his neb. It was $235. When I called the Dr's office to see if there was an alternative that would be cheaper they told me we could go to the qvar inhaler which was about $140. we would have to do it twice a day.

Mine don't have asthma but are on a nebulizer, so budesinide (same as pulmicort) and albuterol.
This but he's on Xopenex instead of albuterol.

Mine has asthma-like reactions to colds, so is on budesinide daily and albuterol as needed.  Both are through a nebulizer, and the drugs are $10 a box.  The nebulizer itself with mask was considerably more.

  • DD has asthma.  She's gotten a lot better with age and doesn't need her inhalers much but when she did it was Flovent daily and albuterol or xopenex when she was having extra trouble.

This. DS is too young to be tested for asthma but pedi thinks he has it. Budesinide daily, albuterol as needed.

DS has reactive airway and is treated as asthma. He has flovent 2x daily and albuterol with a flare (i.e. cold/cough). We're hoping he'll get the ok to stop the flovent in April at his next pulm appt. He has gotten alot better with age similar to this post.

  • Thanks all...I just went w the Qvar since it seemed like the others might be even more expensive, it is what it is (which is sad and I'm thankful we can afford medications like this though still surprised that insurance would only pay $30 on a $170 prescription...). Hoping this is temporary until spring and then we won't have to worry too much until next winter.
