6 month appt - tiny baby

We took LO for her 6 month appt today and found out she's only gained a half pound since her 4 month appt. She weighs 14 pounds 0 oz. I always made the comment that she's tiny, but now it's raised a red flag with the pedi. Our orders are to try to beef her up over the next month and go back for a weigh in. We are going to increase her ounces in her bottle and try to add a second feeding of food. This is sorta dear diary... But I guess I'm also wondering if anyone is/has been in this same boat? And what are some things you did to overcome?

Re: 6 month appt - tiny baby

  • I am in this situation as well. LO is 14lbs and has gained less than a pound since 4 months. The dr said to add a second feedingof food but some days I cant even get her to eat once. So no advice but I will be watcwatching this thread and let you know that I am in the same boat as you.

  • As you know, S's issues are related to her cleft. One of the main concerns for these babies is feeding issues and keeping the weight on, since they burn more calories consuming food. Since 1 week she has been on a high calorie formula. I basically mix it more concentrated than normal. I don't know if you FF or not, but if so you might want to ask your pedi if this could be an option. Also, when I was pumping I would add a supplement to increase the calories of the BM. Even with all of her issues, by doing this it has kept S in the average range for weight.

  • Every pedi is different...E was 12lbs 8 oz at his appt yesterday, up from 10lbs at his 4 month. Pedi isn't concerned; he's eating well, he's gaining (slowly) he's just not going to be a big guy. He suggested nursing on demand, which I was doing anyway, and adding in more higher calorie/fat solids, like meat and avocado, which we've been doing

  • DS gained a little over a pound at his appointment, I thought he would have gained more. Pedi wanted us to give him a second helping of food a day. I've upped his bottles by an ounce. He's not underweight, but below 50th%. The Pedi didn't seem too concerned when I asked about that.

I've also read that breastfed babies are start getting leaner from this point on. (assuming you're BF)

  • I went through it with DD1, only my pedi wasn't concerned. She said as long as two out of three of the measurements steadily increased and stayed on their curve she wasn't too worried. She's still a skinny mini, it's just who she is.

DD2 goes in on Thursday, I'm kind of expecting the same information on her.

  • Thanks for the suggestions and encouragement! I forgot to mention her length... She was 26.75 inches long. Grew 1.75 inches. So she's long and lean. I forgot her head size but she's in the 10-25th percentile there. The weight line didn't fall off the chart but was straight. She's currently still drinking BM but since I've started having a supply issue, our freezer stash has taken a huge hit. So we are supplementing with formula starting tomorrow actually. Drinks 3 5oz bottles while I'm at work. Going to up that to 6. I am glad that she wants to do a weigh in next month to check progress. Waiting to 9 months would be too long for me. Thanks for the reassurance that everything's ok! Sometimes that's all we need!

  • My 3 year old DS was the same way. He was always underweight as an infant. His pedi even had me put him on a higher calorie formula. He's perfectly healthy now, and at a normal weight and height (he's actually more like the size of a 4 year old). I wouldn't worry too much about it!

  • L was 14.1 at her 6 mo 12.5 at previous appt. she's been in the 15th for weight. Her pedi didn't seem concerned. We did up her to a second solid feeding so that make make a difference. Her ped just said she's petite as long as she's gaining it wasn't a concern.
  • My older one is very tiny. She was born almost 9 lbs but was only 18 lbs at a year. This age (6 months) is the point her weight gain really slowed but my pedi was never concerned. Her skeletal growth was consistent. I am tall and very thin and my husband is small (he was a tiny child, mil always jokes how she never needed to buy him new pants). She was just destined to be petite.
  • DD didn't gain any from her 5 month shot appointment to her 6 month well baby visit (still just over 13lbs). Pedi wasn't concerned at all. She is just about off the chart completely but overall still gaining, but at her own rate. So far she isn't real interested in solids. I know she will get there. Each pedi has their own comfort level. Sorry I'm not much help, but you are not alone.

  • My boys are peanuts also, but gaining. Since they're preemies, we go by the preemie growth chart which gives much more favorable percentiles - they aren't on the reg charts.

When they were in the NICU, they had fortified BM but once we came home and transitioned to mostly BFing we didn't fortify anymore.

This is all new to me since my big one grew like a weed from day one.

This exactly. my LO is gaining slowly (13.7 at her 6 month). Doing high calorie solids once per day and adding extra ounces in her bottle. But pedi just thinks it's the weight curve she's on. Doing monthly weight checks for now, but she's happy and thriving, so I'm not concerned. She eats about 30oz a day, so doing well.
  • Reading these weights make me feel like I've got a bruiser at 14lbs 12oz!!! Love all these munchkins!! LO had pretty slow weight gain the first 4 months due to reflux, but has done much better once we added solids.

Good luck!! I'm sure your LO will be just fine :-)
@katies7 I hope the test results come back positive!

Our pedi is similar.  As long as they are eating well, having wet/poopy diapers, happy and gaining (at all) she is happy with growth.  My older boys were 30 pounds by 1 and my girls were almost 1/2 that at 17 pounds at 1 and she said they were all just fine.
