Chlorine free or CD vs chemical diapers? Your thoughts?

I have been using Costco diapers on my LO and then Pull ups for potty training. We are done with #1 using diapers. I did not really think twice about the diapers I was using with #1 since I started out with the Costco diapers. I would see the cholorine free kind and think why that sounds healthy but so much more expensive. Now that #2 is almost here I have been reading and seeing a lot more information on Chlorine free diapers. What are your thoughts? Price, convienence, health, etc? I am afaird to start looking at CD because I have seen all the post about how many options there are and I even went to a store to buy a few to try but the lady said I had to take a 2 hour class first! I had my LO with me and I did nor do I have time for 2 hour class on dipaers. However, CD seems to be a cheaper way then buying Chlorine free diapers but is really overwhelming. I do not even know what my current daycare lady would do with CD?

What are your thoughts...

I use regular Pampers for DS and will for this LO too. He seems to have survived.

You have to do what works for your family (including your budget).

But if you are somewhat interested in CDing, find a new store, that lady seems weirdly pushy about that class. You don't HAVE to take a 2 hour class on CDing to "get it". There are lots of informative You Tube videos and websites (like the Bump CD board) that will give you more than enough information to make an informed Cd decision.

I've watched a lot of youtube videos on CDing, lurked on the CD board here and the CD threads on this board, and read lots of amazon reviews for different brands as well. I went to a CD class yesterday and felt very educated about what was going on. When other moms had questions, I felt like I could have answered them. I'm a FTM so I haven't actually done it yet, but I'm very excited about it.

I agree, that lady sounds weirdly pushy. I mean, does she want you to buy stuff or not? Find out what your daycare says about CDing and go from there, if you're interested. If you're not interested or the daycare says no, then you don't have to give it another thought. Do what works for you.

Take a class before you could buy CDs? Ridiculous! Are there any other stores you could look at? I started with YouTube and online research. Like PP said the CD board here is also very helpful. It definately does seem overwhelming at first but after watching the videos and the CD board I know more than I realized when I did go to the CD class. Hope you find an option that you're comfortable with!

We've used huggies and pampers. This thread is the first time I've even heard of chlorine free diapers. CD is definitely not for us

We've done CD since DS1 was small and I think it's saved us a ton of money. But we use regular diapers when it's convenient to do so. Vacations, long trips, and now at daycare, because I'm just too tired. But even with the occasional box of disposables, we still come out ahead. It's especially worth it when they're tiny because they need sooooo many changes, and if they're BF, you just throw any diaper straight into the wash without swishing/spraying/plopping.

Disposable diapers escape a lot of regulation because they're not technically a clothing item, and they're not a food item. The diaper companies don't have to disclose what goes into them, and some of the things I've seen coming out of my textile classes were questionable. Even if a diaper is labeled "chlorine free" that's just one chemical of hundreds that's not in the diaper. So I never thought the chlorine free ones were worth the extra expense. It's clever marketing. (some kids visibly react more to chlorine, so if your kid has really sensitive skin, it might be worth it). This isn't intended to scare people away from regular disposables; they're perfectly safe for their designed purpose (just don't eat them). Just that unless you have a chlorine-specific skin issue, the extra expense of the fancy disposables just isn't worth it.

There is some terminology to learn, but it really isn't hard. I'm thankful to be able to go to the basement to get more diapers instead of having to dress up LO to go to the store.

We are going Chlorine free but only because DH and I both have very sensitive skin...my skin can't handle many pads without having issues.

The lady at the CD store you went to is a nut bag. What if you just wanted to buy some as a gift for someone, would you then need to take the class? I never took the "class" I totally figured it all out.

I used swaddlers for Asher. I switched to cloth because of blistering rashes. It was awful. I did try the chlorine free dipes for a while, but they cost a ton and leaked.

ALL THE CHEMICALS!

I considered CD when I was pregnant with DS, but only briefly before I decided it wasn't for us. I don't like doing laundry every day or treating certain loads differently than the rest; my parents and the church nursery don't deal with cloth, so we'd have to keep disposables on hand anyway; and DH is a lazy bastard when it comes to diapers. We buy Luvs and store brand, so diapering has never been a huge financial burden for us. Even if it was, we could easily cut costs elsewhere.

Plus I've never seen a legitimate non-sponsored randomized controlled trial showing a direct relationship between diapering and overall health.

I've also never seen a legitimate non-sponsored randomized controlled trial showing that chlorine should be avoided at all costs.

I would so pick the birthday suit option if it weren't for that little issue of having poop and pee everywhere... that would cost SO much less than CD or ANY kind of disposable.
