kidney stones? anyone?

If so I just wanted to chat, especially if your kiddo takes polycitra and/or has kidney stones composed of oxalate. Thanks!

Lily has had Kidney stones. She has undergone 2 surgeries to remove them, but she is still spilling calcium in her urine so she takes a diuretic to manage her kidneys (and prevent them from coming back).

They did analyze two of her stones and I think one did have oxalate. But, I'm a bit fuzzy on that detail (all this was going on while Lily was getting her trach out and so the trach was my main focus).

I've heard Kidney Stones are pretty common in preemies.

  • They said in his case it initially but is not from being a preemie.  (I'm not sure I believe it)  After having his ultrasounds and his kidneys were free of stones, they discovered his citrate levels are off so he is making new stones.  They tell me (I'm not sure I believe) that is not related to being a preemie!

He has an absolute level of oxalate he's supposed to eat a day, but I struggle with that a lot. For one he eats a ton right now.  For two it eliminates a lot of healthy foods and foods he likes.  I obviously don't want him to get stones, but, he gets them when he gets a GI bug every.time.  No matter what I do. :(
  • Do they have any explanation for why he would get kidney stones whenever he has a GI bug? Are the stones in both kidneys or just one?

  • yes, because the kid won't drink and gets dehydrated
  • We are dealing with stones too.  Although not the formulation of new stones, just ones that they dont know what to do with!

Have either of you experienced wild variations in calcium and vit D levels?  We recently had a scare with very high levels that were then more normal when they were rechecked but the docs have not advised any treatment aside from limiting milk to 15oz a day and taking her off of vitamins.
