Toddler BFing and Pregnancy

Okay so somehow I went from "I sure hope I can do this for at least 6 months" to nursing a 2.5 year old.  And now I'm 15 weeks pregnant.  I mostly don't want to wean the toddler, I really want him to wean himself (which he's showing no signs of doing any time soon).  But holy cats this is a close second to nursing a newborn with a tongue tie as far as pain goes.  We've been keeping our nursing sessions short as possible and I think outside of the initial pain the pain starts when the milk runs out and he dry nurses.  So I'd like to hear from other moms who've nursed while pregnant.  Will this pain go away with time or am I destined to grit my teeth until he weans or until the new baby is born and I start producing more milk?

  • I could of wrote this myself!   DS is 16 months and I'm 14 weeks pregnant.  The nipple pain is unbelievable... I'm trying to wean before baby arrives!   I'll definitely be following this post to see if you get any tips!    How many times a day is your DS nursing still?  Mine is 5 - 6 times in 24 hours

  • We've been down to once a day for a while now. I never really saw any reason to wean him any further as it wasn't really interfering in anyone's lives.  He'll go to bed for dad without nursing so I just kept it up.  Cept now, ouch, maybe wishing I had pushed it a little earlier ;)

My saving grace if I keep this up is hoping that my nipples will be more adjusted to nursing when the newborn arrives.  I remember the first two months with the first little piranha were horrible.
  • I'm not much help, l weaned my son when he was 16 months old and I was 14 weeks pregnant. But I knew I didn't want to tandem nurse. If you're intention is to tandem nurse then I think you'll just have to hope the pain lessens. :(

  • I was 14ish weeks pregnant when I weaned.  DD1 was 21 months.  The pain was horrible in the beginning, but lessened toward the end of weaning.  I wasn't interested in tandem nursing though so I didn't plan on hanging in there.
  • Nursing is my DS's greatest comfort, I don't believe that he will self wean before #2 arrives, so I will have to push the weaning...also he will only fall asleep by nursing (still not STTN)     Breastfeeding has been one of the best experiences in my life, up until a month ago we have had no problems or pain.   If he wasn't so demanding I would consider tantem, but as of right now he does not even let me hold other peoples babies, so I can't imagine him letting me nurse another baby while they are still "his boobs".   I guess I am just hoping I lose my milk and he becomes uninterested.

I nursed DS up until he was 16 months and I was just into my second trimester. We were down to just one before bed nursing session. It was harder for me to let go of it than my son. I kind of just started shrugging my shoulders and saying "ugh-oh, no more milk" or "oops, all gone! " and then DS starting doing the same and after 2 or 3 nights, was fine with just snuggles before bed. My husband put him to bed the first few nights away from it. So I guess you could say I led the weaning, but he was totally fine with it...it was not really hard on him at all. I think he was ready too. The pain wasn't as bad for me, only a sore nipple kind of pain, but I'm pretty sure my milk was all but gone and he was dry nursing. Have you considered tandem nursing? Adventures in Tandem Nursing is a book that was recommended to me- I never had to read it since we ending up weaning, but maybe that is something you would be interested in. I was afraid DS would be asking to nurse when my daughter arrived, but he doesn't seem to remember nursing...even though he's only been away from it for 5 months. So everything has worked out the way I was hoping it would. I hope the same happens for you!
