PR: I need to find a therapist

Without getting into too much detail, I had a conversation with my 12 y/o last night that's lead me to the decision to get her into counseling ASAP. I contacted our EAP and got a list of therapists. How do I pick one?  What am I supposed to ask? Help.

  • If you have health insurance and aren't made of money, the first question unfortunately is "Do you take my insurance?"

Well, yeah that's a given. Then what?

  • Could her pediatrician recommend someone? Hope you find someone who can help.

  • What Helen said.  A lot also depends on your daughter's personality too.  Different people respond very differently to different approaches.  If you call a large practice, they should ask you some questions about your presenting concerns, and lead you in the right direction of someone who should be a good fit.  If after a few visits your daughter doesn't feel like she is connecting, dont be shy about asking for someone else.

    Good luck!

  • Also- do you think your DD will be more comfortable with a man or a woman.  My 17 year old sis actually prefers a man because when she had a female counselor in the past they became too much like a friend to her. She started counseling around your DD's age as well.
  • Pretty much everything everyone here said. Also don't be afraid to try someone new if it doesnt seem like a good fit.

    Good luck

  • When I found my therapist I Google searched and found a couple that sounded like their values meshed with what I needed and then I called. I went with the lady that felt right.

You can try someone and if it doesn't work out or she doesn't like them you can try again. Don't be afraid to keep looking is all I am saying.

  • You could try psychologytoday.com
not sure if link will work, sorry if not: https://www.psychologytoday.com/

When I was looking for a marriage counselor this was where I was directed. You can enter your zip code to find a counselor for what you are looking for. I understand you already have a list, but maybe there will be something in their bio that you like or dislike to help you with your decision.
    GL!
  • The other advice I've gotten is some therapists focus on depression, anxiety, addiction, marriage issues, teens, elderly, etc. Ideally it's good to find someone who has some experience in the area the person is having trouble.

  • Schools or churches often have a list of counselors they recommend too.   The other suggestions here are great as well.  Definitely don't be afraid to shop around if your daughter doesn't feel comfortable with the first choice.
