What do I ask?  What should I expect?  How involved am I in the screening?  Just would love to hear how about anyone's experiences.

A woman from EI came to our house last week and we filled out paperwork.  She answered a lot of my questions.  I'm just getting nervous now that it's here.  DS is 22 months and seems to have a speech delay.  I'm not overly worried bc he seems to understand everything we say, but I definitely think he could use some help.

Thanks!

Update below.

  • They will come to your house and interact with LO. They will give DS different activities and such to do to evaluate him. You can ask them whatever you want and address any concerns you might have. At the end of the evaluation they will let you know if he is eligible or not.

  • We went to a private SLP to get DS1 screened when he was about that age, and it wasn't stressful. I'm guessing it'll be play-based, they play w kids while they talk to them. She asked me all kinds of questions, too. I remember I had made a list of all the words he knew, but I don't she really needed it.

DS1 had a delay in his expressive language, but his receptive was on target. He was only delayed 6 months or so, and he went to therapy for about that long. He was talking normally by three, and hasn't had any problems since. Good luck!

In ours there would always a few people there. One was asking me questions while the others presented activities to lo. It takes about 60-90 minutes or so depending on how cooperative your child is. You get the results right away which is nice. Good luck and let us know how it goes afterwards.

  • We had DS1 evaluated at 19 months. Four women came to the evaluation but for the most part only one of them actively played with him. The others filled out the bubbles for the test, one took note/observed and the other handed the woman playing with DS all the props.

They went through fine motor, gross motor, speech, social etc.  They asked us a lot of questions about his speech, eye contact, receptive language but mostly tried to get him to demonstrate what he could do. They gave us the results before they left and told us he qualified. It took almost two months to get a SLP.

Good luck, I know it can be stressful!

  • They ask them to do different "games"  to see where they are developmentally.  For ours they had to get several wrong in an area before they moved on to something else.  DS2 though it was very fun.

  • Thanks so much everyone!  They said we would find out before they left.  All of your experience and encouragement is really helpful!  I'll let you know what happens.
  • Thanks so much everyone for your feedback.  The evaluation went well and they determined at this time that DS doesn't qualify for services.  I'm pretty relieved and I feel good that the women who came got a good picture of DS's personality and skills.  They also were able to give me some strategies for working on language with him.

I was surprised he didn't qualify but they felt that while his expressive language is on the lower end, it is still normal for his age.  They said if I don't see continued growth by the time he turns in May, to call back for another evaluation.
  • Thanks @amy052006 - you aren't freaking me out, I think that's actually a really good suggestion! I think I'm going to give it another few weeks to see how DS is doing, but I'm totally open to getting a private eval.  Where would I go for that?
  • It is reassuring to not qualify.  It is pretty difficult to qualify tho--especially with kids closer to 2 because milestones are not as consistent as when they are first born.  Sometimes if it's only one area, you have to have a 50% delay, which would probably put your LO at babbling.  On the other hand, because there is such a wide margin for normal, you can still get a big explosion and things will be fine.  When receptive language is intact, that's a good sign nothing more serious is going on.  An assessment now or waiting until 2 would both be reasonable courses of action.
  • Yeah he's definitely ahead of babbling - he has about 30 words, but says 5 to 10 regularly.  I think I'm going to see how the next few weeks go.  I can be a pushy bitch when it comes to my kid, so I'll be staying on top of it ;)

Thanks Amy - I'll check out our insurance.

I'm glad it went well!  They told me the same thing with Joey. I was still a bit concerned because, even though his receptive was off the charts for his age, his expressive was barely at minimum acceptable level.  I was fully expecting to have to call back in 6 months for another eval.

I kid you not, a week after the damned evaluation he went from barely talking at all to speaking in full sentences and never shutting up.

This was Reese. She had a delay but not enough to qualify. A week later she never shut up. Now her doctors are amazed she isn't three yet because of her verbal skills

  • Thanks @Kimbus22 & @starearedkid  - I hope this is the case for Charlie!  I'm just gonna be on top of it and see what happens over the next few weeks.  Thank God for the help and support on here!
