Ear infection...

Question for moms that have been through the ear infection already. She's 3 months old. Is it possible to have an ear infection with no fever. No change in sleep habits or eating. Or red ear?....

Reason I'm asking is because the sitter says she grabs her ear. I've never seen her grab it. And we've been watching for her to act the slightest bit different. She never cries and hasn't since the sitter suggested she was grabbing her ear. (A week ago) Except for today the sitter said she cried for a half an hour (which as mentioned before she never does). But she's been perfectly happy since I've picked her up. Ate/slept/played normally.

I did call her pediatrician last week to ask about it and she wasn't concerned at all. I'm just curious if even without all those symptoms has anyone's baby still had a ear infection? Thank you!

Re: Ear infection...

  • Grabbing at an ear can also be a sign of teething.  It's so hard at this age because all of those signs can be teething.

If you are concerned I would just call the doc because a quick look in the ear can ease your mind.  But with no fever I wouldn't assume it is an ear infection.

  • And I think she just found her ears. She now sleeps with her hands behind her ears. And I ask the sitter if that's what she's referring too and she swears no. It's frustrating.

  • But she's not fussy ever and I've never seen her rub her ear. So I guess I'm just over analyzing it lol. Sorry baby girl has had so many :(

  • I would take her in and have her looked at. My DD is 5 1/2 mo and started getting ear infections 2 months ago. Her ONLY symptom was very occasional ear tugging. After a few days I I took her in and each and every time she had what her pediatrician described as a "terrible" double ear infection. Antibiotics never fully cleared them and she just got tubes today. So yes, it is very possible it could be an ear infection, or just a coincidence, but at her age I wouldn't mess around. Take her in.
  • We just finished a 10 day course of antibiotics for my 5 month old. He had a double ear infection, with absolutely no fever. His DCP called me during the day saying he wasn't acting like his usual self and that he as pulling on his ear. When I picked him up from daycare she said she thought he had an ear infection, but didn't have a fever, but she recommended we take him to his pediatrician. Good thing we did, both ears were seriously infected.

  • Mine tugs at his ears all the time when he's going to sleep. He did have an ear infection a few weeks ago but had a decent fever with it (almost 102 F). He was just in for his 4 month checkup and his ears are clear yet he still tugs at them all the time so some babies just tug at them.
