Opinon on "Fresh 48"

I recently booked my photographer for maternity and newborn session. One other item she is offering is a "Fresh 48" session - for $50, she comes to the hospital for 45 minutes and takes pictures in a more documentary type session as opposed to posed photos of baby.

I have never heard of this before. On one hand, I imagine the time in the hospital is hectic enough without having a photographer there but on the other hand, maybe it is so hectic that you don't end up getting many pictures of this time?

What do you think? Have you heard of this? Should I go for it?

Our hospital offers this for free, but it is only 15 minutes,  and we have the option to buy the photos afterward, I am looking forward to it!
Oh, that is really cool! I had never really heard of it before she offered. I don't think it's an option at my hospital but when I googled to find images of Fresh 48 sessions, I really liked them.

  • I've been thinking about hiring our family photog to do it.  I love the way the natural documentary photos look and feel it takes the stress off the hubby and myself!
  • I'm a bit confused, would she be there while you're in labor/as the baby is born or sometime in the 48 hours after the baby is born and you're settled in recovery?

  • I googled it and the first three results do this fresh 48 for $500-$600. So for $50 extra, if definitely do it!

  • Yeah, I was shocked at the price of maternity and newborn pics. It can get crazy expensive and there are already so many things to pay during pregnancy.

I was lucky enough to find someone who is working to build her portfolio so she is offering special pricing ($75 each for maternity and newborn). I would definitely try to find someone similar if you want to cut down on cost.

I looked at her current portfolio and really liked her shots. But in general I figure even of they are not amazing award winning images, I will be glad to have them and it's nice not to break the bank.

No, she comes sometime in the 48 hours after delivery during the day to get natural lighting and takes pics - could be of baby meeting grandparents, you bonding with baby, etc. I guess just of whatever is going on at the time.

  • I think you could get some really sweet pictures out of it. Almost all my favorites of me and DS are the ones where I had no idea someone was taking a picture.

I'm not new. I just hate The Bump.

My SIL had a baby 6 months ago and she said a photographer came to the room and took some fantastic photos and then told her they were $250. Firstly, I think this is really unfair that this was sprung on her, I feel like the hospital shouldn't allow it. Secondly, she said she really wishes she had some candid photos from the hospital, so for $50 I would do it!

That's exactly what happened to my sister. They basically said they worked for the hospital (they didn't) and then tried to extort money from her whole she was still in recovery. I almost punched the guy. What kind of hospital lets those people just walk into your room uninvited?

  • My experience was that the photos they take in the hospital were very posed, unnatural, whereas it seems that the "Fresh 48" thing is more of a lifestyle sort of session, more candid, more natural.  You're not necessarily going to get only posed newborn shots, but you'll get something a little more artistic.

$50 is great.  I got excited when I found a newish photographer who charged $300 for an hour session, and she is open to coming to the hospital.  I might opt for that until my friend, who is a professional photographer, comes later in the summer and have her do family photos.

@love to live For $50, I would do it. That seems like a steal! On this topic... (and sorry for hijacking) Who is doing maternity pics? What style photos are they? What's the price range? I spent the better part of yesterday looking for a maternity photographer online and was disappointed that all the ones In my area typically offered half-naked or barely draped photos... NMS... And they were god awful expensive ($500+ with minimum package requirements). I'd really like more lifestyle photos in a field or something and with clothes on. Suggestions? Edit: spacing is failing even though it's spaced in the text box.
@Tdonatoni You just described exactly what I told my photographer I wanted for a maternity shoot.  I choose to go with my wedding photographer for maternity photos since she does some amazing outdoor couple sessions, which is more the style I wanted.  I would say instead of looking specifically for a maternity photographer look for someone instead that specializes in outdoor couple shots.  The normal price my photographer charges for this is $150 but I took advantage of her black friday sale and only paid $75, this includes a disc with a min of 40 edited images.

People I know who've done them always had clothed ones. They're like engagement photos, they just celebrate something different. I can't really imagine what people would do with semi-nude maternity (or non-maternity for that matter) photos. You can't put them up, put them in the baby scrapbook, or send them to your grandma. Maybe you can just say you want engagement style photos?

  • OP - $50 sounds like a good price if that's something you want to do.

I just reached out to my wedding photographer for a quote. She was really fun to work with 4 years ago. We will likely have to travel to her in Paso (central CA) for it, but it will probably be what we want and more reasonable. Who doesn't like a trip to Paso anyways?.
You're in Paso Robles?! I grew up in Atascadero. How fun! If your photographer doesn't want to travel, there are loads of good photogs in the area. It's become such a wedding destination lately.

EDIT: read that wrong....you were married in Paso and that's where she lives. Oops! Anyway, nice area!
  • While the idea sounds great and the price is right..when I think back to my hospital stay, there's no way I would want a photog in my room with me. I was a mess. I delivered at 7pm, didn't sleep at all that first night. The next morning there was a parade of people in and out in and out..from my doc, to the pedi, to the hearing test lady, to this one and that one. I just wanted to lock my door..and then the visitors started..who were only our immediate family but it was neverending.

All during this I was trying to figure out how to BF so I was in lounge pants and a zip up hoodie with no bra for easy access and trying to figure out what the heck happened down below. Nurses had to help me to the bathroom to deal with massive bleeding...

so, now that I know what was going on, I'd probably not opt to do it just for the pure craziness of the time after birth.

  • Personally I would love to do something like this, but I think you should do what makes you the happiest.

Do you think you may regret passing up the option in the future, or would you be just as happy with the photo's SO and whoever may be in the room with you taking the pictures?

  • As PPs have said, $50 is a steal for this!  I would go for it!  Bella Baby is probably the most well known of 'companies' that do this and it is expensive!  Here's their link.
