Baby wrap help!

Trying to decide between a baby k'tan and a moby wrap. Any ladies with experience with either of these please share with me the pros and cons. I'm stuck between the 2!

Re: Baby wrap help!

  • I believe @joules235 has the the k'tan? And @ncbelle knows a lot about baby carriers as well I believe!

I have no input to either of these, I am looking into getting the Boba 4g baby carrier. Good luck @mztwilson

  • I have a K'tan. I really like it. It seems easier than the Moby to me, but I don't have a lot of experience with the Moby.
  • The k*tan is way more user friendly. I felt like I never got the moby tight enough. Plus I hated that the sashes on the moby would drag all over the ground when putting it on.

That being said, I definitely prefer Ergo type carriers but those aren't good until baby is bigger.

@ncbelle has a blog with a lot of baby wearing information on it.  She might be able to help.

That was very informative! Alot of good information!!!
  • @lilnunz1 is your k'tan the breeze or regular? Is it hot? I'm worried that with North Dakota summers it might be really humid but at the same time I don't see that being a huge problem as I wouldn't take baby outside with a high humidity.
  • I loved my Moby wrap with DS, but I have decided to order a Mei Tai Versatile 3 in 1 Baby Carrier because I wanted something that was a little more user friendly especially in situations such as going grocery shopping, but still has the feel of using a moby wrap.

I dont feel like I can keep baby in the carseat in the cart, have my son in the seat of the cart and still have room for groceries.  I want to be able to put something on that is quick, where as the moby wrap takes a little bit to tie.

  • The moby does have a learning curve. I remember opening it and wanting to cry, haha. But I got the hang of it and I enjoyed using it for the first few weeks as long as we were indoors. I found it to be very hot and DD was born in August, we definitely couldn't use it outside. The k'tan is more user friendly, but I've never actually used one. I just know that it's easier to get baby in and out of.

The thing I will say about the moby is that after my DD hit about 15 pounds, I didn't like it anymore. It stretched too much and was uncomfortable. But it was a good gateway into woven wraps which aren't as hot and not stretchy. I still use them with her and she's 18 months old.
  • I have both and really loved the k'tan over the moby. They both did all the same holds I wanted to be able to do, but since the k'tan is 2 loops versus a long wrap I felt it was much easier and quicker to put on especially out in public. It also seemed to fold up smaller and lighter to keep in the diaper bag. I plan to order the breeze version for this babe too since I plan to be outside a lot this summer :)

The con of the k'tan is that it is sized to the wearer so if you get it to fit you, it may not fit your hubby or anyone else who plans to wear baby. This wasn't an issue for us, but may be for some people. The moby will fit pretty much anyone. Hope this helps!

I wanted the closest thing to "baby wraps for dummies" (or "baby wraps for the intensely lazy").  So I bought a k'tan.  I LOVE it.  I wore my 9 month old niece around in it all day and it was SO comfortable, and only took a few seconds to figure out how to get it on.

moby isnt hard to learn. I watched a youtube video. Took me maybe 2 trys and I had it down pat.

However, the shelf life on the moby is short. Once DD hit 13-14lbs, she was too heavy and I could never ever get it tight enough where I didn't feel uncomfortable wearing her. She would just sag after being in it for minutes.

So, around 10-12wks, the moby got put away and we used the Ergo and my mom made me a ring sling. It could have been my user error...but I couldn't figure out how to use it once she hit that weight.

  • I'm registered for a K'tan Breeze (June in Alabama is hot). And an Ergo for later.  I'm a FTM so I don't have any first-hand experience with either of them, but I've heard they're both good.
This is what I did too.  I registered for the K'Tan Breeze (because the summer in AZ would not handle anything else) for when she's little, and an Ergo for later.

The downside I found with a K'Tan is they are size specific, so we'd have to buy a separate one for DH, whereas the Moby can be used for both.  However, I think THIS video definitely helped make the choice easier when you see the side to side comparison of how much more labor intensive the Moby is.

If I find we really love the K'Tan, then I'll buy one for H.  If not, the Ergo, which I also registered for is adjustable and can be used for both of us anyways.
  • I'm not to worried about size as me and dh are both smaller. He's 5'4 I'm 5'3 so reguardless of what I go with we will both be able to use it. I want something that like @eltrain5 said is "dummy proof". All of the info I've gotten so far has helped a lot ladies thanks!
  • Is there a store in your area that lets you try out the different carriers?  We have a cloth diapering and baby wearing store where they let you try out all of the carriers with a fake, but real weighted, baby.  I plan to go in for the baby wearing part (already was in for CDing).  We also watched a live demonstration of 5 different carriers at a baby event in town.

That's a great idea! I'll have to look into it and see!

    Have you tried googling instructions?
  • There's a ton of DIY wraps on Pinterest.... However I don't trust my DIY skills lol. Anyway, is K'Tan breeze the best for hot weather? Savannah during the summer is monstrous heat, and I don't want either one of us having a heat stroke!

  • I'm totally the resident babywearing pusher ;)

@LoHerrim I have instructions in my siggy link that might help you (well in the babywearing guide which is linked in my siggy).

I think the best advice is to see if you have a babywearing group near you (there are tons now!) so you can try out different options.  Between the k'tan and the moby…I feel like the moby gives a better fit so I give it the edge (although I actually prefer the Boba wrap over the Moby wrap at the same price point).  The k'tan sizing is a bit tricky.  I had one with my oldest and felt that I had to wash/dry it all the time to get it to keep the right fit.  But it does have a shorter learning curve.
  • I have both a Moby and a Beco (very similar to an Ergo carrier), and hated the Moby. For me, it was very difficult to wrap it so it felt like DD was secure in there and wouldn't fall out if I wasn't holding her bottom. I loved my Beco!

@ncbelle please tell me about the Mai tei! Which brand is good? Does it have the comfort of a wrap with the support of a more structured carrier? Basically what I want is something I can use from birth up that's soft while still supportive. And something that I can easily nurse with. I like the idea of a wrap but I've never worn a baby so I'm a total newbie when it comes to this!

Eta- I just reread your blog. Everything I wanted to know was there :)
  • This will show you local BWI groups near you. You can join and attend meetings and try different carriers and wraps before buying:

I have a Beco, a woven wrap and a ring sling (which are so easy). I chose against a moby because they stretch and ka'tans frightened me with their sizing.

  • @mztwilson I have the regular K'tan. I live in northern OH, tho. It can get hot here, but not for an extended time. The breeze might be a better bet if you're concerned about heat.

@LoHerrim You're on fb, right? The group is called Babywearing HD. They'll post the meet ups there and you can ask any questions you might have! I didn't start out in this group, but an OC group just like this is what taught me!

For those who have had the K'tan did the sizing seem pretty true to size? I originally registered for a Moby but I think the K'tan Breeze is going to suit my needs better and like someone else said is more "idiot-proof" which is definitely what I need, haha!

  • @babygabe614 from what I have read in the reviews it sounds like it is pretty true to size.
  • And if you're on the cusp of sizes? Like between S/M? Should I just go with the smaller and hope it stretches?

I'm also in between sizes so I went with the smaller size. It can always be exchanged if needed.

  • For our spring/summer babies I would recommend going with a k-tan breeze. Very lightweight and breathable. My all time favorite is the Moby but it can be very hot.
