STMs - Scoliosis

Has anyone had a successful vaginal birth with scoliosis and an epidural?

Or a successful C-Section with a spinal?

I've yet to discuss with my doctor, but I've read that both of these can fail and that in some cases neither will place right and you'll have to go under general anesthesia, which I would definitely like to avoid. From my past experiences with general anesthesia it takes awhile to wake up.

  • I have scoliosis and had no issues with the epidural or vaginal delivery. My doctor and i never even talked about it so I'm assuming it's not an issue unless it's bad?
  • When I had my epidural with DS, the anesthesiologist said I had a little scoliosis (first I had ever heard about it). So he just started over in a new spot. It wasn't fun sitting there trying to be completely still, but really not a big deal.

I am a first time mom. Have scoliosis and have had it corrected with lots of metal instrumentation, so an epidural is out for me. I am going to have to be brave or go for the anesthesia with a c section. My midwife offered that I meet with an anesthesiologist before labor. Maybe that might be helpful for you too.
  • i have a 40 degree S curve and that is part of why i've gone drug-free x 2.  i didn't want to have issues with lengthy placement times or with the epidural not working (which happens often even without scoliosis!).  i've had an orthopedist say it shouldn't be a problem but i just didn't want to add that to my list of worries, and i preferred to do it naturally anyways.  if i needed a c/s and there was time for a spinal, i'd be fine with at least trying for the anesthesiologist to do it before committing to general anesthesia.

actually, now that i remember, for my first birth, we did a consult with the anesthesiologist when i got checked into the hospital.  he thought it would be fine if i changed my mind for the epidural.
  • I have severe scoliosis and have had my spine fused (upper and lower) and my OB is convinced an epideral won't be a problem at all. I am a FTM so I am not sure how all this will go down but trying to not worry about it. I would discuss your options with your OB. Even if you go natural and for some reason end up needing a c-section the meds are administered with an epi unless you are knocked out completely so I would want to talk to her before about it so all bases are covered.

@kimbercash79 did you talk to your dr about options for an epideral? I was REALLY surprised when my OB said it was an option for me to have one. My orthopedist had always said with my scoliosis I would either have to have natural or completely under anesthesia birth... Just interested to hear about your experience.

Also, thanks for posting and sorry for the super long response!!!
  • My scoliosis curves one way, and then back the other. Essentially my back is S shaped, but because the curves are pretty even, I never needed rods or fusing. I won't get to talk to my Dr. until later this week, I was just curious what others experiences were. I'm trying to best prepare myself for all possible outcomes.

  • I've been told by my OB it depends where you are fused and I'm fused from my cervicals to my lumbars.
  • I had a spinal fusion surgery due to scoliosis when I was young. I was sure to ask my doctor if an epidural would be okay and he said they shouldn't have any problem administering it.
