Breastfeeding

cluster feeding and sleeping

Hi! .my LO is nearly two weeks old and he cluster feeds until abt 2am on most nights. He also rarely sleeps for 4 hours straight at night.

Our pediatritian didnt seem concerned but he said that babies usually cluster feed earlier in the eveening (not until 2am) and should give us at least one 4 hour stretch at this point.

Is this accurate for bf babies? If so, what can I do to shift his cluster feeding and get him to sleep more?

(Note weight gain anf supply seem ok)

Thanks!!

Re: cluster feeding and sleeping

  • I agree with PP. Just follow LO's lead for now. You can try to encourage more sleeping at night by keeping things as dark and quiet as possible from say 9 pm on. You could also try offering to nurse more often starting earlier in the evening, but really it's pretty important to follow baby's lead at this age to be sure he/she gets the nourishment needed.

This too will pass. Keep up the good work mama!!

  • My LO often sleeps a longer stretch between 7-10ish then clusters for about 4-5 hours (not constant but will eat every hour-hour and a half) then sleep about 4 hours (if I'm lucky). I think it is more common for them to cluster earlier, but it's definitely not a hard and fast rule.
  • My girls are 7 mos old and don't sleep for 4 hr stretches at nite....
