Baby won't take a bottle

So I have to leave my baby girl a couple of times a week to go to school. It is only for a couple of hours at a time and usually her feeding schedule has worked around those times. I've given my mom a bottle and some frozen breast milk in case E gets hungry while I'm gone.

The problem is that she won't take the bottle. I had issues with this when the doctor wanted us to supplement with formula for a few days too. It was a real struggle to even get an ounce in her. She also hates pacifiers even though she loves to comfort suck. I've tried different nipples and types and the bottle we are currently using is avent natural so it is supposed to be somewhat similar to the breast.

Has anyone dealt with this before? How did you end up getting LO to take the bottle? I am afraid to leave her because I don't want her upset and hungry.

Re: Baby won't take a bottle

  • Were you the one giving the bottle? Sometimes it's better for someone else to give LO a bottle and have you (mom) out of the room. LO might be upset to have the bottle and not breast feed if you are giving the bottle.

  • I second that, if possible try not being in the room and having somebody else give the bottle.  I have the exact same issues (won't take bottles), but DH is away so I will have to wait until he's home to figure out what bottle DS2 will take.  I'm not desperate for him to take a bottle so it can wait.

  • Thanks for your input ladies. Today it was someone else giving her the bottle and I wasn't there. So that isn't the problem unfortunately.

I don't want to have to go and buy a million types of bottles - everything we've tried so far she hasn't liked. If I never had to leave her I wouldn't care.

  • My baby refused the Avent bottle, but likes the Playtex Nurser. I know it sucks to have to buy all kinds of different bottles, but that might be your only option.

Would you rather buy different bottles or keep forcing a bottle that isn't working and she isn't eating in the meanwhile? Because it seems like the Avent bottles aren't working for your DD, so those are your options. Can you go to a consignment store and see about buying some bottles there? Just buy new nipples then. Or put it out to your friends on Facebook if you can borrow a bottle to test it out.

  • I didn't mean for it to come across as not willing to do it if that's what it takes. If I have to go buy more bottles I will. I was just wondering if anyone had found anything else that worked for them to get their LO to take a bottle. We have tried a few different things up until this point and so far nothing has worked so I was just looking for some other possible options. Sorry I didn't make that more clear in the original post.

  • Dd didn't like a bottle, and hates pacifiers, but we were able to get her to take a bottle by giving her one everyday. She still isn't a huge fan of the bottle, but she will take it while I'm out. As for bottles, just keep trying till you find a good fit. I just buy one at a time.
  • I am having the same problem - sometimes she take them successfully from me, DH, and MIL. Other times she refuses it from any of us. I have tried 3 different bottles and different nipples and she has one that the pedi gave us that she likes best. I just try to be persistent and try to start feeding her the bottle before she gets super hungry. And she likes it best when I am standing, walking around, and shushing. Not ideal, but if that's what it takes for her to eat at daycare in a few weeks than so be it.
    Good luck!!!

  • My LC mentioned that if you the mom give your baby the bottle, they might refuse because they know the real deal is right there. Why drink out of a fake nipple when the real one is two inches away. Lol.

  • My best friend's son hated all bottles and she had to go through a bunch of them before finding one he would take. DD hasn't had any issues with taking a bottle, but it seems like she likes the wide ones better. Maybe cause it's more similar to the breast?

  • My DD isn't a fan of bottles either.  We are just trying every other day to get DD to drink from a bottle.  My DH is the one that gives it to her.  He tries when she is just waking up, so she isn't completely aware of what is in her mouth.  If she is really fussy, then he stops.  I never feed her right after she refuses the bottle.  I don't want her to think that if she doesn't get the bottle, then she gets my breast.  So, DH plays with her for a little while before I feed her.  We have tried 3 types of bottle so far, but if she still isn't taking one next week, I am going to buy another kind.  The most she has drunk from the bottle is 1/2 an ounce.
  • I guess that we are just going to have to keep plugging along! My mom is going to keep trying to give her a bottle when she is there, and I will look into other types of bottles that we haven't tried yet. She isn't liking Avent natural, playtex, nuk, or gerber nipples so far.

I also got thinking last night that this scares me a bit for when I have to go back to work. I am not taking my full year off, so at some point in the next few months, she is going to have to go to my moms while I'm at work and I am just really hoping that we find some kind of bottle that she will eat from without putting up a fight and stressing herself out.

  • Landon HATES bottles and pacifiers which is a nightmare at night when he comfort sucks. We tried kiinde, advent, Momma, tomme, multiple playtex and finally MAM worked but they are difficult to work with because of leaking and heating issues. Dr. Browns was our most recent try and has been a success for 2 bottles. Good luck! For us it's a mix of stubbornness and hating most nipples. You may need to try a few.

I second what the PP are saying- be out of the room when your mom is feeding her. Have you tried Mimijumi or Como Tomo bottles? They are pricey but seem to work well! My LO took to the Como Tomo really well. Both are really wide and look like te breast. Keep trying and good luck!

I haven't tried those, or even heard of them - thank you for the suggestion! Our options in stores here aren't that great, I think we've tried most of what is available. If nothing else works, I might have to check Amazon for these to see if they are available there.

  • There's a page of suggestions for this problem in The Nursing Mother's Companion. I can't remember all of them, but can post more tomorrow when I have the book in front of me. In addition to having someone else offer it, the two pieces I remember are to try offering it when she's not hungry so there's no "desperation" involved, and to try to slip the bottle in for a few sucks while she's nursing.

Oh thank you! This the kind of thing I was hoping someone would be able to suggest. My BF book doesn't have any information on this topic that I know of but I'm going to go back and check it as well.
