Vent/Dilemma

As most of you know I am a high school math teacher. We have this asshole of a principal who wants every detail his way and doesn't care if it interferes with what you are trying to teach. I have literally worked from 7 am until 5 pm every day this week. Then come home and worked some more. I have also been working at least 8-10 hours every weekend since mid-January. I don't mind working but one of the reasons I chose teaching was to have time with my kids which isn't happening at all. I'm not even spending time with my dad who is having some major health problems. It just sucks.

Now to my dilemma. A few weeks ago I was actively looking a job outside of teaching. My heart is in teaching but the pay is too low and the hours and stress are becoming ridiculous. I haven't had much time lately to pursue my job search and may not until the summer. I love my time off and my summers off, having the same schedule as my kids is great. But I am beginning to wonder if it's worth the cost. I am really only getting time with them for about 10 weeks of the year, counting summer, Christmas and spring break. Weekdays and weekends are a crap chute. Would I be better off working all year with less breaks but no working at home? I need some opinions from moms who work 8-5 jobs. I need some insight!! Thanks for reading and thanks in advance for any advice!!

Re: Vent/Dilemma

  • Honestly, any job can require that you work after hours. Especially one that pays more than you're making now. At least now you're guaranteed the breaks you do get. Although I'd definitely see if a transfer to another school was possible.

  • If you're heart is in teaching, I would look for another teaching position, personally.  Although you might make more in another profession, you'll never get 10 weeks of vacation anywhere else.  I would take a pay cut in a second to have that much time with DS.  Good luck to you!!

  • I don't really have any advice except just remember the grass always seems greener on the other side . . . until you are there.  I would love the summer off to spend and/or 10 weeks for that matter.   I also agree with PP any job can require you work overtime and there are special bosses everywhere.  :)  I would do what brings your the most fullfillment.    Also - have you looked into private schools or another school district maybe?

  • Sorry it took me so long to get back to this post ladies! Thanks so much for your advice. I think @ginabina11 hit the nail on the head with stress from the new curriculum.

As for the question about working in other districts I think each district has its flaws and stresses here. I also am teaching at the school I graduated from and the one my kids will go to in the future. I said when we got this principal that I was not going to let him run me off and every time I remember that I feel bad for having second thoughts. I'm just at a very difficult spot but reading others perspectives does give me some good insight.

  • Just want to say it's not "letting him run you off" if you get a different job that lets you be happier. That would be a good choice for you!

My husband and I both teach and are experiencing the same things as you are. I have so many years in I cannot leave, my husband is contemplating it. Our big hold for staying is the excellent pension and medical benefits and of course the love of teaching and the kids. It's a shame the education world has become so test centered and miserable!
  • I'm not a teacher but I wanted to wish you good luck and I hope that things get better for you with the job! It looks like you got some good advice from PPs. Keep us posted on how you are doing!
  • I have told myself I am not working at home this week. I just painted my nails to keep myself from working. Lol. I am hoping taking a step back will help. We shall see.
