Breastfeeding

Screaming baby

Today has been rough. DS hates my breast. She will latch and start feeding then in five minutes her world is coming to an end! She starts screaming and crying. So I try to burp her and then switch sides. The same thing happens. Big giant tears and come-apart screaming. I have no clue what it could be.
She does get a bottle of BM at night and I'm beginning to think she's starting to prefer the bottle to the breast. I also called the pedi, they think it might be an ear infection. But she doesn't have the typical symptoms. I'm going in tomorrow.
We have never had any problems breast feeding. DS is 16 1/2 weeks and is usually a happy baby.
Any suggestions as to why she is so upset? TIA.

  • Also she sucks down a bottle after the breast feeding cry fest.

  • I agree with PP. Either it's because of ear infection or your DD is starting teething. Good idea talking to your pedi. Hope ear infection is not the reason why your DS is fussy. *cross fingers
  • No ear infection, and she's not teething. Pedi said it's probably becoming a bottle preference but she is just so incredibly upset literally 5 minutes after feeding. How can I continue to nurse when she is so upset? I'm very frustrated!
  • How about a warm bath before feeding? Or, might be colic? Here's a link that might help.
  • Hope this has gotten better!  This happened to me one day and I was in tears all day because it felt like LO had just decided he didn't want to eat from me anymore.  I felt rejected.  Luckily the next day he was back to normal, though he sometimes does this during witching hour when he is overtired or overstimulated and then is back to normal by the MOTN feeding.  We just give him a bottle during witching hour to avoid the stress.
  • This has happened to me too, nothing wrong with baby, just fussy. I don't know how many times I've cried to my husband that my baby hates my boobs. But I just keep switching sides and giving breaks and we got through it. She also got a lot more efficient around 4 mos so nursing didn't take nearly as long. She could be getting all she needs and just ready to move on to something else.
