Baby Food Makers: Organic?

For those who make their own baby food... Do you buy all organic food, just buy organic off the dirty dozen list, or don't buy organic at all?

I've been trying to buy organic fruits and vegetables that are on the dirty dozen list, but my grocery store doesn't have a very extensive organic section. I know they will have more organic fruit in the summer, but until then I don't have very many options. The closest Whole Foods and Trader Joe's are 40 minutes away. Would you take the drive and stock up or just use the regular non-organic fruits and vegetables?

Re: Baby Food Makers: Organic?

  • I buy organic food when it doesn't have a thick skin/peel. Like bananas, avocados, etc I will buy non-organic.

If you go to Whole Foods, you can just make all of the baby food, then freeze in ice cube trays.

  • I try to do the dirty dozen, but I've cheated a few times when non organic has been on a really good sale. I think I'm going to try to do a Wholefoods run this week though. I keep buying the same things and that pouches post made me realize I need to add some new options to the mix.

  • I buy organic when possible, but I don't go out of my way to get it if it's not available at the time.

  • We are 95% organic. I generally buy  organic produce that is on sale and then freeze it, or I get frozen bagged organic produce (corn, mangos, beans ect.)
If it is on the 'Clean 15' list I'll buy  non-organic.

  • I guess this should be my FFFC. I don't buy anything organic. Am I the only one?

  • I buy all organic which makes us run into the problem of making the same foods it seems. I'm in Canada so sometimes the selection isn't huge due to the weather :(
Honestly, just do whatever is easiest on you and doesn't create stress. So sticking to the dirty dozen is good! You're feeding LO which is awesome :)

Originally, we were buying organic for the dirty dozen, and sometimes other stuff too if we could find it. The clean fifteen and the non-dirty dozen stuff, we were usually buying conventional. But then we really wanted to do organic peaches since they are the dirty dozen, but fresh are out of season and the frozen ones at our local supermarket were not organic. We went to Whole Foods to get some, and their organic selection is so good that we switched to all organic for his purees, even for clean fifteen. Our Whole Foods is closer than yours (20 minutes), but even if it were 40 minutes away like yours, I personally would go anyway. If it were me, I would go every two or three weeks, then make and freeze the purees before the fresh stuff goes bad.
  • regular, non organic. Sometime's i'll buy frozen organic veggies. Maybe you can check to see if your grocer has that?

  • I think we are about 95% organic. I usually buy conventionally grown bananas. Sometimes organic. Pretty much everything else is organic, and meat/poultry is "Step 3" or better.

  • I do frozen organic fruit since its hit or miss right now. However most veggies I buy a bunch frozen and freeze at one time. If stuff is on sale I buy it in bulk and find ways to use it everyday before it goes bad. Yogurt I do buy stoneyfield or fage. I've bought the big containers and used my coupons. I'm not a stickler but try to get it when I can.

  • I have no clue what the dirty dozen means, or the clean 15.

I buy just fresh produce, and one time i bought a frozen bag.

when I've gone out if town, I've bought pouches...the organic ones.

@araziza you're not the only one...i do the same.

Ditto. I much prefer to spend th extra money on buying locally grown food if I can. We also farm in the Midwest, so it's a tad easier to find local produce during the right seasons.

I also don't believe organic is any better than non organic foods, so there's that, too ;)

    Trapped in the box but

    DS1: Everything organic.
DS2: Anything within reach that I can put on his tray that makes him happy. I make all of his purees and pouches in big batches on the weekend, but our family goes through a ton a fresh fruit and produce and I couldn't afford to buy it all organic right now and I'm not doing separate bunches of broccoli, zucchini, etc. I wash the heck out of everything and hope for the best. I try and buy most of our stuff from the farm stand during the spring and summer but for winter it is whatever I can buy on sale at the normal grocery store.

I totally understand wanting to save money, but I don't understand the argument that organic isn't better for people/healthier.
  • I try to follow clean 15 instead of dirty 12. As in, I buy non organic for clean 15 but everything else I try to buy organic. However if it's not available, I will buy conventional.  It also helps that I live 5 minutes from whole foods. The only thing I buy organic for sure is milk. Breastfeeding made me realize that what we consume passes through our milk and I don't want hormones that are injected into cows to end up in my body through their milk.  I am also thinking about switching completely to coconut or almond milk.
As far as organic food goes, it is my understanding that eating organic food isn't medically proven to be better for you health wise, but that it is definitely better for the environment to promote more organic farms.

  • If I have time and cash, I go to a small stand near our house, otherwise I get what's at the store and on sale, organic or non.

I don't want to start a debate, I know this can be a hot topic. :) but, to give a quick answer to your question: Like a PP said, there is no medical or scientific research to support organic is better for us than nonorganic or vice versa. And many chemicals and pesticides that are organic aren't that safe either, so I think it's just a matter of preference.

Eta: sorry, I'm mobile and meant to quote @BC&LM. :)

I can respect that; I just don't personally feel the same way, which is why I said I don't understand the argument. And it's not entirely true that there isn't any scientific research. Here is one article talking about a study that seems to indicate organic milk is better for you:
    https://www.nbcnews.com/health/diet-fitness/yep-organic-milk-really-better-you-regular-milk-f2D11712970

But I think we all know that different studies often arrive at different conclusions!

I don't personally eat all organic myself, but I do think it would be better for me if I did. Taste, convenience, and
cost often win out when my husband and I buy for ourselves, even if we buy LO all organic.
