How much BM per bag?

So I FINALLY am pumping enough to start storing some in the freezer (yay!) but I am wondering how much I should store in each bag. I've read that once you thaw BM you need to use it so I want to be careful not to waste. LO is eating 2-3 oz at a time now but I that number will start going up more and more. I'm not really planning on using the frozen BM until I go back to work but you never know I guess. Any advice from anyone who has any experience is appreciated! TIA

Re: How much BM per bag?

  • For the majority of the time I pumped, I typically stored mine in about 3-4 oz. bags so the waste was minimal. I did 2-3 oz. bags at the start. Most bf babies don't really ever drink the big bottles that you might see a ff baby drink. So you don't have to worry about making bags with really large amounts.

  • I do both 3 and 4 oz. before bed If some is left in the bottle, I'll use it 2.5 hours later at the next feeding before BF.
  • In the early stages, I did 3oz bags, but then never more than 5oz, even when my baby was older/eating more.

Usually 3oz and then a few 2oz bags for the times baby doesn't seem satisfied after and is still hungry. So none goes to waste :) it always hurts to dump any left over "liquid gold".. Once baby consistently takes more i would freeze in bigger 4-5oz bags.

Edit to add I have not yet started to pump and feed w this LO but this is what I have done in the past w my other kids :)
  • OP, you read my mind.

  • If it's for going back to work, I would fill up the bags to their max. I would always use frozen milk first in the day (in 6 oz lansinoh bags) which would be about 1.5 feeds, and then fill with fresh milk from fridge (which I had pulped day before/that morning). Mondays I always needed some frozen, but used more recent milk the rest of the week unless my stash was getting old.
  • @clb2196 I think once it is thawed it's only good for 24 hours, even in the refrigerator.
