Orphans' Lonely Beginnings

Warning, this story contains reference to child abuse

I heard this on NPR this morning. There have been new studies on the brain and how neglect changes the brain physically. It's hard to read but very interesting.

My counselor/therapist talked to me about this story this morning because her whole schtick is neuroplasticity (brain's ability to re-wire) and that's what we are focusing on to give my anxiety the boot.

I saw this blog linked here once and it broke me, but it relates to this story: https://theblessingofverity.com/2012/10/the-story-of-katies-adoption/
(warning: uplifting story, but heartbreaking situation and images you cannot unsee)

  • When I used to teach, I had a little boy in my class that was adopted from Romania when he was 18 months old.  His adoptive parents were very kind and loving people, but this poor little boy was so detached it was downright creepy.  It was so heartbreaking to see so much malevolence in a three year old child.

I worked in child psych and although mostly saw US born children, children adopted from Russia were a disproportionate part of the population we saw. And unfortunately they are known to be particularly bad cases- many had severe behavior problems due to attachment issues after birth.  So heartbreaking because you could catch a glimpse of what a great personality they have, only to be overshadowed by many other issues (self-injury being a big thing).

  • I find all of this so interesting and so sad at the same time. I am strongly drawn to the field of psychology and learning about how the brain works fascinates me but it makes me so sad that these studies can even be done and that there are so many children suffering.
