One up, both up

One up both up. Are you doing it now? If so, all the time or just a certain times like middle of the night? DD is on a g-tube and has to be fed at certain times. I have some flexibility for the overnight feed. Last few nights I've been letting her wake up and tell me when she's ready. It's been ranging between 1245a and 2a. In the hospital she was 9a, 12p, 3p, 6p, 9p, 12a, skip 3a, 6a, and repeat. However, DSis now sleeping about 6 hrs and waking up around 4a or so. I don't really want to wake him earlier as he's finally sleeping longer stretches, but a couple times I just got DD done (it takes her 1 hr to get fed off her pump in the middle of the night because she is laying down) and DS gets up. Thanks in advance!

  • I think if it was me and DD was ready for a feed 2 or later id wake up DS as well, otherwise I'd let him sleep. GL, that must be hard I don't know much about G tube feeding.

  • We still do one up both up at almost 8mo. They eat at the same time, day and night, 98% of the time. I tandem BF and it works for us.

MOTN, one always wakes first. The few times I haven't woken the other, he woke within 15 min and that doesn't fly in this house. I think of it like a dreamfeed - H brings them both to me and helps me put them back.

We feed at the same time bc it's convenient. I'd do whatever is easier for you, honestly. Can you dreamfeed the sleeping one?

  • I never did it.  I would feed each baby when it was hungry and put them down when tired.  Often they did want to eat and sleep at the same times, but not always.  I had a lot of help though in the beginning, if I didn't have the extra help then I am sure I would have tried it.

  • I don't do it. I tried but just can't get if to work. I have one decent sleeper who will do a 6-9 hour stretch at night and one bad sleeper who still gets me up every 2-4 hours. There's no way I'd wake my good sleeper just because her sister doesn't want to sleep and once I do get the poor sleeper down, I never want to wake her.

It is the same with naps although I find if they get up in the morning at about the same time and feed at the same time, their naps will often naturally tend to synch up. I actually prefer it if they are about 15-20 minutes staggered because I hate feeding both at once - it's messy and chaotic, and if I'm alone and have to put them down for naps it's easier if they're staggered just a little.

  • At 19 weeks we still do one up both up. They are on the same schedule during the week at daycare and will sometimes get off that on the weekends. But by nighttime they are back to synced. I've tried a handful of times during the mOTN feeding to not get the other one and always they have woken up within 30 minutes of me going back to bed.

But both are good eaters and I'm not dealing with a g tube or poor sleepers.

  • We always do one up both up. We have one twin who likes to sleep a little more than his brother. So he dream feeds when his brother wakes. I will stop the one up both up around 8-9 months and try to see if that works to get them to start STTN.

  • Yes, we do it and are on the same 3,6,9 schedule that you are on...also b/c they came from the NICU. We are pretty strict about it except for at their 2 week check up (so 5 weeks of age) we stopped waking them at night. When 1 wakes up from hunger, they both get fed, and then starts the 3 hours again. I have a lot of help from MH though and we both get up, so we are only up for about 45 minutes at night.
