Natural Alternative to Petroleum Products for Dry Skin?

LO has terrible dry lizard skin on his legs and arms and I have tried TONS of coconut oil, Shea Moisture lotion, Johnson's lotion (I know, I know...), limited bath/soaps, even some of my Bliss Body Butter, but nothing seems to work. The pedi recommended I use Vaseline or Aquaphor, but I'm not comfortable using petroleum products on him. Does anyone have any suggestions for severe dry skin? I Googled it and California Baby and Aveeno kept popping up as suggestions from around the interwebz.

I'm going to run to Whole Foods later and see what they have but was hoping for some good trusted brands from you ladies. Thanks!

  • There's a non-petroleum Vaseline like product at Whole Foods called waxeline. Try that

  • Vaseline has a non petroleum type of vaseline that is specifically for babies.

  • I used aquaphor (well the target brand) and it coats her skin fine but really doesn't do much for the dryness. We have a pedi appointment today so I was going to ask about this.

  • We slather on coconut oil then put Aquaphor on top to "seal in" the moisture... maybe try that with the alternative Vaseline stuff?

  • Coconut oil... Always FTW!

  • Pure shea butter maybe?

Can I ask what is wrong with petroleum products?
The jury is out on whether petro products are "bad" or "harmful", they are FDA approved, after all. However, I'd just rather use something that is animal or plant based over a product that is the by-product of oil refining and can also be used to make gasoline. I'm not sure that they are truly effective in moisturizing - they really only create a water occlusive barrier that doesn't let the skin breathe, so applying it on dry skin will only dry the skin out further and the chemicals can accumulate in internal organs. Plus, petro products can sometimes contain parabens which have been known to be carcinogenic.

See link here to the EWG's Cosmetic Database - good research for a lot of products. Also, see here and here for recent studies linking petro products to possible cancer-causing ingredients.

  • Yeah, for eczema, it seems that only cetaphil cream and aquaphor on top is the magical combination.

I am very "crunchy" when it comes to chemicals and household toxins, but this is one area that I am not overly concerned about--especially since I know first-hand how uncomforable dry skin is (and probably even worse for a baby that doesn't have the coordination to scratch itchy spots!)
  • I use coconut oil but maybe a heavier oil like crunchymama 11 suggested might work better for "lizard skin". :)
