Re: 12 Month meal plan

  • Honestly, my LO is not very picky, but I exposed her to a variety of foods, textures and flavors. She is almost 19 months old now but I stick to a schedule. When she wakes up, usually around 7-7:30 she usually has milk, cheerios and some sort of cereal bar, sometimes scrambled eggs, etc with grapes or a banana. I mix it up. If she wants a snack, I usually will give her cheerios or those little baby hotdogs or some sort of baby crackers. I rarely give her juice. it is either milk or water. between 11 am-1 pm is when she will have lunch, depending on when she is up from her nap.

Lunches vary. She will do PB& J, Turkey sandwich, chicken fingers that I make myself, tuna sandwich, etc. usually she will have that with her milk and then some fruit.

Same thing as mentioned before for snacks.

For dinner it also varies. She will sometime have some of the stuff listed for lunch for dinner. She can usually eat whatever me and Ds are eating. She usually has dinner around 5 pm, as she goes to bed for the night now around 6-6:30 pm.

Sometimes to get her to eat more veggies, I mix them in with whatever she is eating. She usually does not notice.

Also if you can, try to start weaning him off of bottles. GL.

  • Hi @purpleyes1081

First of all, relax and don't stress.  DS can get very picky at times (comes and goes in phases).  Your DS is getting enough protein b/c of the bottles, but try offering things like yogurt, cheese, WCM.

DS only gets what we eat (esp dinner).  If he doesn't eat, it's okay. I cook a variety of foods so we aren't offering him the same foods every day.  Keep offering is key.  Also, don't make a big deal if he eats or doesn't eat something.

I was VERY stressed out about DS's eating habits when he was your son's age.  There were nights I was so upset (b/c he wouldn't eat anything I made, and I made it specially with him in mind) that I had to leave the room to cool off my emotions.  It's hard not to take it personally when all he did was throw the foods onto the floor without even tasting them.

I ended up getting the book Fearless Feeding and it has been a lifesaver for me.  My attitude has changed and our whole family is so much more relaxed and happier at meal times.  As a result of the change of attitude, DS is eating much better now than before.

  • I think flavor is really important. My LO won't touch plain steamed veggies, but if they are mixed with some seasoning, there is a much better chance he'll at least try a few. Same thing with meat - last night he gobbled up baked chicken simply because he liked the italian seasoning I had sprinkled on it.

You can also build off things your LO does like - if toast is a favorite, try spreading some other things on it. Big hits with my LO are cream cheese, peanut butter or sun butter, hummus and mashed avocado. And grilled cheese….oh, grilled cheese.

I second the Fearless Feeding book - it's been a lifesaver for my sanity and anxiety about what LO eats.

  • Like PPs, we give him what we're eating and have done so since he was about 10 months old or so.  We usually offer him something we know his likes if we're having something he doesn't or something he hasn't tried before.  For example, I love roasted broccoli and LO was never much of a fan so I often made him some green beans with that meal while still offering him the broccoli.  Well, just a few weeks ago he decided he liked the broccoli and ate all that I gave him and half of mine!  Just keep offering things and he may eventually like it.

Also, like other PPs have mentioned, my LO usually prefers things to be seasoned.  Roasted veggies with EVOO and a little S&P instead of steamed, meats with sauces/seasonings instead of plain, etc.  He also likes to dip things - so veggies with a little ranch, sweet potato fries with dill dip or ketchup, pita bread with guac, that sorta thing.
  • I also agree with the previous posters. My laughter just turned 1 two weeks ago as well. For the last few months she has always eaten what we eat at dinner. There are a few foods that she doesn't eat after I have offered them several times. She doesn't like avocado and she's not big on steak. Those are the only two foods I noticed she out right refuses to eat no matter how many times I offer it. Some foods like cauliflower took a couple of tries for her to eat other foods like carrots she loves. I have never skimped on the seasoning. I just started using more powders (onion or garlic) or Mrs. Dash which is salt free. We have never had a problem with fruit. So far she loves all fruit. Including ones I don't like melon and bananas. For snacks we do fruit, yogurt, crackers, bagels etc.
  • at 12 months, LO's typical day was:
bottle or cup of milk at wake up
8:30am breakfast about half hour later:  regular oatmeal, yogurt and fruit
noon: lunch: noodles, steamed zuchini, tofu with terriyaki sauce, kiwi, cup of milk
3:30pm:  2nd lunch: peanut butter and jelly sandwich, steamed peas, cup of milk
5:30pm: dinner: pieces of chicken, sauteed veggies (carrots, sweet potatoes, onion), steamed spinach, banana,  cup of milk

generally LO eats eats yogurt, oatmeal and fruit for breakfast, sometimes eggs, cheerios or a pancake.  LO's two lunches we also do shredded cheese, pieces of turkey, peanut butter crackers, a wide variety of steamed or sauteed veggies, lentils with rice or quinoa, etc.  ANd dinner is whatever we are having just chopped up: lasagna, stirfry, burrito, spaghetti, pieces of meat, mashed potatoes, whatever.
I once your LO has mastered chewing, I don't think there is any need for puffs-- empty calories and too sweet.  Same with yogurt melts and pouches unless you are out of the house.

black beans sound super healthy, so I'd offer that often-- a great staple.  Quinoa also has protein, and eggs are usually a crowd pleaser.  Keeping the milk to around 16oz a day, and avoiding snacks should help with eating more at meals.  The key at this age is to offer things many times.  The other thing that helped us a lot was to play around with veggie texture- steaming until things are fully soft/mashable helps a lot.
