Suckers

At what age did you let your kid eat a sucker by him/herself?

The cashier gave DS (15 months) a sucker last night at the grocery store, and I let him eat it in the car - big mistake. It was a safety sucker with the soft loop handle, but it made a huge sticky mess. DS doesn't know to lick it to keep from getting sticky drool everywhere. Plus, I don't know if he's old enough to start giving him candy.

On the upside, he spent the entire ride home from the store eating it and saying, "Mmmm. Mmmm."

Re: Suckers

  • DS was about that age, but it was outside where I could hose him off afterwards. lol and not in a car

  • I think she was about 2.5 - last summer. Never in the car where I can't get to her quickly though.

  • I can't remember if E has had a sucker yet, but I did let her have a candy cane at Christmas.

  • I think he got his 1st one at his 1st haircut, so about 13 months.

  • He hasn't yet, but if for some reason I was eating one, I would let him have a few licks.  I would probably hold it.  I also dont let him eat in the car, it makes me too nervous because I can't see him.  Plus, he really enjoys making a mess.

  • I don't think my son has ever had one, but mostly because it seems like way more mess than it is worth.  I also waited until he was closer to 2 (around this past halloween) to give him candy, just because it seemed unnecessary and he didn't have any idea what it was.  Now, of course, he does and it has created a monster!

I think more than him having the sucker is the part where he was having it in the car.  I've only recently let my son eat a little bit in the car, and even then it is only cheerios.  I was way too nervous to let him have anything to eat in the car because I felt like I wouldn't be able to get to him in time if he ended up choking on something.

  • DD had her first at 21 months. Another vote for not letting her eat or drink in the car...
  • DS is only 12 months, so no lollipops here. He's still really into fruit pouches and apple sauce as treats so I'm going to let that ride as long as possible!

  • DS is 20 months and hasn't had one yet. I think he'd probably get it pretty gross by like sticking it to his hair or dropping it on the floor. He's had some candy though. We've given him pieces of kit kat as a treat.

  • DD is almost 3 and I think she has had one but definitely not in the car (although she is FF so...) DS is 18 months so we haven't done suckers. I give him his cup in the car all the time. He is RF so I don't like to give him food. We have given him food on long car trips to stop him from screaming but only if we are both in the car.
  • I thought you were calling us suckers...lol.
  • <--- allows DD to eat and drink in car for sanity.</p>

I do too, but I pick the food carefully. Only water, and nothing sticky or really messy... And I wouldn't do anything really easy to choke on.

Usually I stick to things like string cheese or goldfish.

Actually, yesterday was the first time I let him have a whole lolly pop (and really a whole piece of candy all to himself)... he's almost 2 and a half

I was still nervous because I'm paranoid like that...but he did fine and actually surprisingly kept the mess to a minimum...just a bit on his hands and face.

Had to bribe him with it so he'd sit through his haircut .... Of course kid was an angel and sat nicely the whole time.  Dammit.
