This afternoon, I'm taking DS (3years old) to his Speech Evaul with a Speech Therapist.

I have no idea what to expect.

He's not delayed in his speech, actually talks all the time, just I'm the only one (most of the time) who understands him. Not even DH can understand him part of the time. He has his moments of speaking very clearly but when he's excited or just gets going it gets hard to understand what he is saying.
My Sister (who is a early childhood teacher) said I should get him evaluated for his speech, so I brought it up to our doctor and she said it wouldn't hurt so here we are.

What should I expect at this appt?

  • At 3, my DS was evaluated in our local school system but I was not present.  They took all the kids to another room.  He played with the teachers, they evaluated all areas - gross motor, fine motor, speech and I got a report.
It was different that when my other DS was evaluated by Birth to three - that too was totally play based but I was there since they came to my house, was able to ask questions, but really the therapist just interacted with my DS to get the evaluation done.

  • We recently went and had DD1's (4 years old) speech evaluated. It was very laid back. Basically there were two women and they played with DD and asked her lots of questions and had different toys and did pretend play. It worked really well to get DD to start talking since she can be shy. Then they played a game with little cards that had pictures and asked DD to tell them what was on the card.

  • We have been through evaluations in two states. In the first state DD was evaluated at a children's services office. There were three people in the room, they evaluated everything even though articulation was our only concern. It was all centered around play. It lasted about an hour and DD had a blast.

In the second state, they came to our house. There were three people here (2 evaluators and a supervisor). They tested everything again (walk a line, jump, eat/drink, puzzles, answer questions, follow directions, etc.). Again, it was centered around play and the kids had fun.

  • Update:

Went well enough. We won't know until tomorrow if he will for sure need therapy or not. She says that he speaks well enough for his age. Just needs to work a bit on his articulation. We won't know on the test until tomorrow, she said that if he does need it, we will just need to come in maybe once a week.
They did a little play, and looked at pictures, and played tea. So it wasn't bad.
    So tomorrow we find out.
