Is there any reason I need to deal with this? (Foot injury question)

Last summer I broke my toe by shoving it in the opposite direction that my foot was going. It felt like the break was closer to my foot than the end of my toe. I've hit it a few times since then, and each time it hurts farther down my foot. Today I caught it on something again and it really feels like the break is in my foot, not my toe. In fact, I had a small something poking out a little bit on the side of my foot (very small, like a tic tac). I poked it back and that didn't really hurt. I'm able to walk on it and workout on it with no problem. Occasionally, I get a sharp pain up and down that side of my foot that only lasts a couple of seconds. I went to urgent care when it first happened last summer because the toe had to be reset/"reduced". I can't imagine anything else that can be done. I'm not telling dh bc he and I have an ongoing argument about my unwillingness to see doctors. I'm okay just letting it be, right?

My sister had a bone fragment floating around her foot that she ignored to play varsity soccer. Ignoring it meant the damage it caused required two surgeries and months of recovery. Anecdote!

Go get it xrayed. Why are you hesitant?

I am bad with doctors. I also have pretty bad bunions and I dread the day when I have to get corrective surgery. I just had dh look at it, and he doesn't think it is bone sticking out, but he wants me to get it checked too. I hate doctors. Sorry, doctors.
  • Why are you unwilling to go to the doctors/hospital/seek medical advice?

See above. Needles, the smell, I just have a really hard time with it. Not sure why. I was never able to go to my annual gyno appointment without crying on the table until I was pregnant.
  • Going to the doctor isn't a trip to the spa, but it's not torture. I've seen many over the years and only encountered one that I had an issue with. They aren't out to get you;) You should go. It'll be ok.

The longer you delay, the worse most of these issues get.

Tell the doctor you're anxious. Spray some perfume on your wrist and sniff that. They're not going to be sticking a needle in your foot to diagnose this, so don't worry about that.

  • Another anecdote - I went to the podiatrist for ingrown toenail surgery, and I was expecting it to be kind of like a pedicure. It was a bit more than that. But - I'm so glad I went, and my toes are completely fixed.

If the pain is consistent, or getting worse over time, I would definitely go. And something the size of a tic tac sticking out - yikes. Maybe you can buy yourself a toy or a candy bar after if you have that hard of a time with the doctor. :)

You're not in GA, right? If so, I could recommend a podiatrist.
  • Go, go, go. Ongoing or repeating and/or migrating (moving around) pain means something hasn't healed and you are just setting yourself up to make a tolerable injury into something much more painful, expensive, and difficult to recover from. Hey magnet you'll get a temporary handicapped sticker out of it.
