Any teachers that job share or work part-time?

Currently I job share with a 50% contract so I work Thursdays, Fridays and every other Wednesday. My partner fills in the other days. Since it's almost like planning for a sub on my Fridays I'm often at school until 5:30 prepping for my partner to come in on Monday. I'm wondering if going on one week and off one week or looping around the weekend would mean less prep work for a partner. I'm just wondering if anyone has found the "perfect" job sharing and/or part-time teaching schedule.

  • I don't job share but when I was in high school two of our English teachers did. They both had had babies in the last year. One taught 2 classes in the am and the other taught 3 classes in the pm, so between them it was a full load. I think that would be ideal for a teacher.

  • I'd be interested in job sharing.  I'm also an English teacher and since I don't really see any benefit in working 1/2 a day I figured someone could teach the reading classes while the other person taught writing.  Is there a way you can divide the subjects so you each plan and teach your own?  What you're describing doesn't sound like a job share though.  You shouldn't be doing all the planning and prep work for the other teacher.  Do you know if the other teacher even wants you doing this?  If I were the other teacher I'd be irritated, since it's my class too I would want alot of say in what was going on in the classroom.  I think you need to do a great deal of communicating so you know what you're covering and what activities your using, but I think each teacher needs to be responsible for their own planning and prepping.
  • I taught full time for 8 years and then did several years of part time and now am back to full time. I teach high school. When I was part time I just taught fewer classes. Depending on the year I was anywhere between .6 and .9 and taught either my classes back to back in the morning or in the afternoon. It was nice to be home by lunchtime to spend the afternoon with my kids or to be able to go in late and drop DD off at preschool in my way.
  • I teach part time. I just started this year after having my daughter last year and I love it. I'd the perfect situation. I teach middle school social studies. We are on a modified block scheduling so the kids have ss every other day for 90 minutes and then all of their classes on Fridays for 45 minutes. I teach all day on Mondays and Wednesdays and then until noon on Fridays. On the opposite days the kids have science where they have another teacher who is part time. She just works opposite of me. It really is the perfect set up and I feel really lucky to have fallen into it. I haven't taken a day off - sick or personal all year because the t/th is a great break. I'm able to still keep my teaching career and be able to spend more time with my daughter. How it will work next year? Not sure the plans on that yet. The teaching schedules change very year based on enrollment (I'm at a private school) I can't imagine having to go back full time after having been part time.
