3rd Trimester

Success after Mirena?

Hi.  First, congratulations to you all!  I've found myself back on The Bump because DH and I have decided that we are ready for #2.  DD turned 3 in October and she needs a little brother or sister :)  I will be getting my Mirena removed on Friday after having had it for only 7 months (we thought we were one and done... we were wrong :) ).  I never stopped getting AF though it has been lighter and shorter so I'm hoping that is a good sign for success.  I'm wondering if anyone here was successful after having an IUD removed.  3rd tri was my go-to because I'm looking for total success, not just early.

Re: Success after Mirena?

  • I had a Mirena from May 2011 to August 2012. I stopped getting my period. I ended up being sensitive to progesterone (I react poorly to most hormonal BC, but this was atrocious) so I will not be doing this again.

I got my period back quickly but my cycles (according to my charting) really only normalized around June 2013. We started trying right away and I got pregnant July 2013. I've had no issues with this pregnancy so far, so success story for me (though I'll reserve judgement about "total success" until I bring my baby home with me).

This is rather silly. Of course people have been successful after an IUD. It is a fully reversible birth control.
  • I had my mirena in for the full 5 years. Didn't get it replaced b/c it screwed with my hormones and made me waaay too moody. We weren't TTC for the next 3 years, and didn't do anymore BC. I found out pregnant in August 2013 after I was already 3 and a half months along. Now just waiting for LO #4 due in 2 weeks.
  • I got pregnant immediately after having mine out. It's just like stopping the pill.

  • I had Mirena for 9 months (Feb. '12-Nov '12) and had to have it surgically removed since it traveled into my abdominal cavity. I was concerned about being able to get pregnant, but had no problems. I got pregnant the first month we tried (Aug. '13).

I know people have been successful - I was just looking for personal stories ;)

Thanks for all your answers.  This was my first time on something other than the pill and I was just looking for some reassurance :)

  • I got pregnant 4 months after having mine out. I'd had it in for about 2.5 years and didn't have periods.

I had mirena for just shy of 2 years. I didn't have a period while it was in place. I was able to conceive my first cycle and now have a beautiful healthy little boy! :)
  • I had mirena for a year and had it removed. When I got pregnant I struggled with progesterone levels which my doctor believes is from the mirena. I was lucky to keep the baby because they were really low but progesterone supplements helped. I would just make sure that your doc pays attention to these levels.

Wouldn't have even thought about this.  Thanks for the info!  Glad everything is working out!!

How long after you took it out did you get pregnant?
  • The IUD is reversible BC. Of course pregnancies happen after removing an IUD.

I had an IUD for 5 years, it was removed in 2010, and I used NFP until I ready to TTC in March of 2012.

"Your truth is different from my truth, and we're both right."

    TTC since March 2013. BFP 4/13/13, blighted ovum discovered 6/6/13, m/c 6/8/13.

BFP 11/10/13, EDD 7/25/13 - stick little owlet!

I got pregnant about 7 months after I took it out. We weren't trying because I was trying to regulate my body after mirena (my cycles were extremely irregular) so I wasn't on birth control. Surprise!

No problems after Mirena. I had really bad endometriosis and tubal blockages that were causing
infertility (totally unrelated to the Mirena), but once I had surgery, I was preggo in 3 months.
  • I got the mirena when my daughter was 6 weeks old and then had it replaced at her 5th birthday. I kept that one in for 2 yrs and then we removed and started TTC. It took us a little over two years of trying to get our bfpa and it was a total shock because we had kind of given up hope after 2yrs of calendars and timing and all. Now we're due in just over 5 weeks. It's also worth mentioning that I am plus size and over 35 which both contribute to difficulty in TTC. Good luck!
  • I had mine for 2 years, got it taken out Aug 5th, period on Aug 7, BFP Sept 5th. Got pregnant both times first cycle off BC.
  • My SIL had mirena for awhile (1-2yrs) and then decided to switch to the pill. She got pregnant during the switch with her surprise DD who is now 2.5 years old.

  • I had the mirena put in january '11 and was period free until removal in early may '13. I got my 1st period in late May perhaps 2 weeks later but it was very light. I had a more normal looking period in June but waited until after my July one to TTC. This was my 1st time to get pregnant on the 1st try and all is well.

I remember like it was yesterday counting down the days to my mirena removal!! So exciting! Best of luck to you!

  • Thanks for all the info and replies.  It came out with no problem at all.  I had a NP who did the removal and she recommended waiting 2 months for the progesterone to equalize.  It's a little crazy to go from 'no... we are done' to 'I don't want to wait 2 months!'  Good luck to you all!
