How old when you transitioned LO to bed?

My LO loves her crib and sleeps a solid twelve hours a night, no problem.  My DH and I are expecting number 2 at the end of July!  I'm just debating if I should move my DD, who just turned 2, into a twin bed now so she has a lot of time to get used to it before we have our new baby.  Do you think it would be better if we waited until she was 2 in a half?  What age did you move LO to big kid bed?

Re: How old when you transitioned LO to bed?

  • I'd wait. If it ain't broke...

Both my kids were a couple months shy of three when they transitioned to a bed.

  • One at 2 and one at 3, based on when they were ready/asking.
My kids have never been good sleepers but I would have paid quite a bit more than the cost of an extra crib and mattress if it would have made them good sleepers. I wouldn't move her and just put the new baby in a pack b play or similar or pay for a new crib from ikea and thank your lucky stars for a kid that sleeps 12hr per night
  • DD #1 is 2 1/2. We just had DD#2. 1 has no interest in transitioning to a bed. She sleeps great in her crib. #2 will be in a bassinet for a few more months....we're not making any changes yet. Like PPs, if it's not broken, we're not fixing it.

  • DD was just shy of 15 months when she climbed out. She probably would have fallen out head first if DH hadn't walked into the room at the right time to see her hanging upside down. We moved her that day.

DS was 18 months. With the near accident with DD and her transition having been so smooth, we wanted to move DS early too in hopes we would avoid injury and he would also have a smooth transition, which he did.

Just do what feels right for you and your child.

  • DS1 is 2.5 and still in his crib. He loves it, has never tried to climb out and sleeps absolutely fine. I am not going to mess with that so he can stay in there for as long as it works. I happily paid for another crib when DS2 came along! I say don't force the change if there really isn't a need for it now.

  • 17 mos due to climbing. But sometimes I still wish he were in a crib!

  • We transitioned DD1 a little early - around 20 months - because we didn't want to buy a second crib and we wanted her to have a bit of time to get used to the new bed. She did fine at bedtime, but it got harder to put her down for naps. We moved DD2 just after she turned 2, because she was potty training and needed to be able to go to the bathroom. I think she adjusted even better than DD1 did.

  • DD (almost 2.5) is perfectly happy in her crib, not climbing or anything, but it's tough for me to lay her down in there anymore, so we've been talking about transitioning her for a few months now, but just haven't pulled the trigger.  Now that I'm pregnant, we'll be transitioning her this spring/summer sometime.

  • I planning on doing it in a few weeks. DD will be 26 months. She has been slinging her leg over the top for a few weeks. I am just waiting for her big girl furniture to be delivered.

  • We transitioned DS to a toddler rail on his crib at 20 months, because he was starting to climb a little.  Then, 6 months later, we just went for it and got him a twin bed (it was Christmas, and we got him a race car bed).  We had no issues with either transition, and he was SO excited about his new "big boy" bed that Santa brought!

Maybe you can get her excited about the transition to a "big girl bed" by letting her help you pick out sheets and a comforter?  It might be easier than you expect if you play it up as something fun!

Whatever you decide, I wouldn't do the transition at 2-1/2, which sounds like it would be right when you have the new baby.  Either do it a couple months beforehand, or give it 3 months or so after the new baby arrives.
  • DS1 was almost 3.5. He slept so well in his crib but we finally transitioned him when he was potty trained. DS2 will be transitioning sometime this spring/early summer before baby arrives and I am dreading it. He's a terrible sleeper and I foresee major problems in convincing him to stay in bed.
  • We potty trained our son when he was 2 and 2 months, so we thought we'd put him in a big boy bed at 2.  It was totally fine.  He is very chill, though.

  • My DS was just shy of three when we moved him and it was because we needed the crib for DD.  I was going to wait about the same amount of time for DS but she has been lobbying hard for her own bed so it may be sooner (maybe 2-1/2??).

  • She was 18 months.  She never slept well in her crib and frankly, we wanted the option of laying with her in her own room (since we bedshared).  She loves her bed and recently started STTN.

  • DS is 29 months and still in the crib. As long as he is sleeping well & not trying to get out, I'm leaving it alone. He can sleep in there until he's 5 for all I care. Haha!
  • DD was 3 months away from her 3rd birthday.  Same thing, loved the crib and slept well in it, so I wasn't going to mess with a good thing!  She still goes in there sometimes to read books.  We finally had to move her because DS needed it.  But I was glad we waited, DS slept in our room for the first 7 months, so about a month before we moved DS we moved DD into her 'big girl bed'.  It was perfect because I wasn't dealing with the exhaustion that comes along with being pregnant or having a new baby.
  • Keep the crib! My two are exactly two years apart, and I am so thankful I bought a second crib. I think it has protected her nap. dd1 is now almost three..I guessing will have to move her to a bed soon.
  • We converted DD's crib to a toddler bed at 2, and moved her to a big bed at about 32 months...both times were a breeze, and she was actually excited at the change.

I had DS when DD was 21 months, but we opted to buy a second crib rather than move DD into a bed at that early age. I just didn't think she was ready, and I'm glad I didn't rush things looking back.

  • I would not move your LO until she starts climbing out of the crib then you transition. Your next baby is due in July then you can use a bassinet for awhile too so there's no rushing the process. Messing with a good thing might bite you!

Our LO climbed out at 22 months and that night we took the side rail off the crib and put on the toddler rail. A few months later she asked for a bigger bed and said the toddler bed wasn't comfortable anymore so we switched to a twin.
  • DS1 just transitioned to a toddler bed a few weeks ago.  He hadn't figured out how to climb out of the crib yet, but I was having issues lifting him in and out with my pregnancy.  He seems to have adapted well to the transition.  Right now we're debating when to transfer him to a twin (if we'll need to buy another crib), but since I anticipate DS2 will sleep in our room for a while, I'm going to wait until after he's here to make that determination.

  • We just transitioned her. She didn't climb out or anything; but we were in the hospital for 3 weeks with her and she slept in a hospital bed there. Came home, and within a few days wasn't happy with the crib so we decided to move her. Right now she is on a mattress on the floor in her room--her bed will be hopefully here within the month.

  • 18 months due to her wanting to lean over the crib while. The bed was converted the next day.  Ain't nobody got time for an injury and now I feel better at night.

  • Two days ago, so at 2 years and 2 weeks old. We were not planning to do it then, but she jumped out of her crib after nap that day. So big girl bed it is. The transition was nbd.

  • We moved DD at 2y4m. She had never tried to climb out, she just seemed ready and she did great.

DS just turned 2 and we have no plans to switch him any time soon. He's climbed out once, but has not done it since. I forsee it being a big PITA getting him down once he's in a bed, given his stubborn and adventurous personality.

  • Still in a crib at almost 2.5yrs.  She technically can climb out, did it once while DH encouraged her (ack) but she hadn't tried it again and doesn't seem interested. We will likely do it around age 3 in the fall unless something changes sooner.
