Frustrated and sad.

I'm feeling so frustrated by sleep training. It's not taking and there are a lot of tears.

When I was in the USA we had him sleep trained for about 1.5 weeks until we moved locations and that confused him, rightfully. That week was glorious. He slept, I slept, my dh slept. We were all happy and no one sobbed (after the first 2 days) constantly.

Since we have come back to Sydney it just hasn't taken. He started out taking loner naps which the first time ever and was waking up around 1 am and 5 am.

Now he is taking 20-30 minute naps, if napping at all. Last night I was basically up from 2-5. He would not go back down to sleep. At 2 he wanted to eat but didn't want to stop. I fell asleep while he was eating and broke him off an hour later. Them he would not go back. So falling asleep was my fault and letting him get too cozy I guess.

I'm just getting really frustrated and upset. I don't want sleep to be this awful experience for lo. I also need a break. I need an hour or two to get things done during the day. I need to sleep sometimes at night. :( he is 8 months old. There should be some sleeping going on on this house already, right?

Sorry for my vent. Any advice welcome.

  • I am in pretty much the same boat as you. I feel like we have tried everything and nothing has worked. DH and I are taking two weeks of having him on a strict schedule to see if it makes any difference. We were at a friends last week and she put their 5 month old in the crib at 7, he cried for a few seconds and fell right asleep. I started crying so much because William has never done that. If we put him down awake he can cry for hours.

There are too many days in a week where I am up for 24 hours straight because of no sleep and I agree, our babies are 8 months and should be able to go at least a few hours without getting up. I wish I could be of more help, but if the schedule helps I will let you know! We are on day 3 and it is slightly better. William has been sleeping soundly from 7 until about 11!

  • Just remember ladies there is an 8 month sleep regression. Not that that really helps! We are also not sleeping much in this house either. She goes through such a roller coaster with her sttn and then not it is so hard. Hopefully something gives and you ladies can get some much needed sleep and rest.

  • Two things:

    1) There is definitely a regression right now. N was sleeping perfectly with great naps but in the past 2 weeks has been refusing to nap longer than 30 min. So part of it is a phase and it might be hard to train during the regression.

    2) How are you doing the sleep training? Are you being consistent?

  • Not sure if this will help but my friend saw a sleep specialist and after making the room darker and turning on a loud white noise machine nightly she saw an immediate turnaround. The sleep specialist said it was all about creating a peaceful sleeping environment. Good luck!
