Talk to me about Dream feed

Anyone doing it? What time do you do last feed of the evening and what time do you dream feed? Then what time does LO first wake up?

We've been putting DS (who is ebf) down at 730. I've dream fed at 10ish the past few nights with hopes he'd sleep later. He's still up anywhere from 1230-130. That is the same time as the first wake up if I didn't dream feed. Just wondering if I should scrap the whole idea since I'm still getting up at the same time.

  • Hmmm, I'm not sure the dream feed is working in your favor. Maybe try a few more nights just to see. But if LO isn't sleeping longer it doesn't seem worth it.

With DS1 we did sleep training around 8 months. I then did 3 dream feeds every night. I would pick him up, he would wake up a little, and he instantly wanted to nurse. It's a little different bc he was older.

DS2 falls asleep anywhere from 8-10 most evenings. If he fell asleep on the earlier side I was waking him with a diaper change and then nursing him. Lately I haven't bothered with the late evening diaper change to wake him to nurse. And knock on wood, he's been sleeping ok. Every LO is different and they like to change things frequently to keep us on our toes. I hope your LO gives you more sleep soon.

  • I would skip it especially if he wakes at all. I'd be afraid of baby thinking they need to eat when actually they could have gone longer. What about a later bedtime?

  • I have no idea what a dream feed is, but your child is already sleeping 5-6 hr stretches? I'm mobile and can't see the age, but I don't know that you can expect much longer than that.

The idea behind dream feed is that LO has 1 long sleep stretch a night. So in my case, I guess DS's is when he goes to bed around 730-8. The hope of dream feeding is to interrupt that long stretch and kind of reset the clock so the long stretch begins later and hopefully ends in the early morning rather than motn. You basically feed LO while he's still asleep to tank him up. Sorry for the run on sentence!
  • @cnwilbur1030 We're in the same situation. We decided to try the dream feed because he had been sleeping 5-6 hours straight and then once fed he'd sleep until to 6a, but over the past two weeks he started waking 2-3 times throughout the night with only 2-3 hour stretches of sleep in between. We just started doing the dream feed a few days ago and he is still getting up at the same times for his MOTN feedings.
I think the dream feed isn't working for us because generally he'll cluster feed from 6-7:30 and use nursing as a prop to fall asleep. So when we wake him for the dream feed he's just not that hungry. Tonight we're going to try breaking the habit of nursing him to sleep in hopes that when we do the dream feed he'll eat longer than 5 minutes and get him past at least one of the MOTN wake ups.
