My kick counter doesn't start until 28 weeks. No siggy-- not sure how far along you are. They don't require you to do it until the end if everything seems to be going fine after a couple weeks. 10 kicks in 1 hour, I think.
I was told if I was concerned about not feeling baby as much to count but to expect much lower numbers than what you are all saying. I think she said 4 in a hour or 6 in 2 hours was fine.
My doctor has never mentioned it to me. I have an anterior placenta and just started feeling her around 23 weeks. I'm 27 weeks now. She's just asked if I can feel her.
I'm 30 weeks and just asked my doctor about this at my appointment this morning. I was told that as long as I can feel consistent movement throughout the day, then I'm fine. I wasn't given a goal or count to reach. It helps that baby girl has been super active, so I'm not worried and neither is my doctor.

Same here. At my appointment this week (I'll be 30weeks tomorrow) I asked if I should be counting. He said as long as I feel him moving throughout the day, there is no need to count. My LO seems to have his active time and his down time, and Dr. said that if that changes significantly, let them know.
My doc never mentioned anything about it, but when I felt like baby B wasn't moving normally and called, they said to do the fetal kick count. I had already been doing it for the previous day and that morning and said it didn't feel normal, so they had me come in to check things out. Baby B was okay, had just moved around, so I didn't know it was him kicking. So they never mentioned it to me until I thought there might be something wrong.
I just had my 28 week midwife appointment and she told me to start kick counts but I won't unless I feel off or don't feel baby all day it's a stresser that's unnesassary if you ask me I also have a Doppler so I can quickly check HB if needed but she said count at least 10 movements in a 2 hour timeframe and not to be concerned if baby has no movement at all for up to 40 minutes since that's the sleep intervals they have.

My OB also never mentioned doing it. Sounds like too much work for lazy me. They just ask if I've felt the kid moving and I just make sure I feel some good movement throughout the day. Once I was worried and they hooked me up to monitor...kid was going crazy thrashing around. I'm not sure what was wrong with me that day!
I have just always made sure to take some time each day to notice he's moving (which he does, A LOT). My OB always just asks me if I feel him, no counts specifically. I do have a phone app that counts along the recommended 10 kicks in an hour thing, but the nurse told me at my last appointment they recommend just looking for 6 kicks in 2 hours.
I guess they get a lot of panicked moms calling them or L&D if their baby is having a slower/lazier day. I definitely get 6 in 2 hours if I am paying the least bit of attention. But this isn't even something my OB told me, the nurse just mentioned it last time off-hand.
Mine mentioned it today. Starting at 30 weeks, ten times in a two hour period at a time she normally moves. A lot of doctors don't do them though. It's really just about making sure movement is consistent on a daily basis.
My doctor just always asks at each appt if I'm feeling baby move. I guess I kind of know what's normal movements with her, so if I don't feel her move as often as usual, I will call.
This. I'm 26 weeks-ish right now and my last appointment was around 23 weeks, so it could still come up but it hasn't yet.
My ob said start at 30 wks and 8-10kicks in a 1 hour time period. Not sure what studies (if any?) have been done on utility of kick counts since it seems everyone has a different recommendation
I just feel this kick counting is stupid. I haven't asked and OB hasn't told me anything, but we're seriously expected to count the # of times baby kicks/moves? I don't know about you all, but I'm so busy at work and when he/she moves, I smile and move about my day. Now, yes, this happens frequently in a short period of time, but I probably go a few hours w/o feeling anything either. I think this is one more thing to worry/stress over. Sorry - needed to vent.

I never did kick counts with DS and don't plan to with this one unless there is a reason for it. As long as I feel her moving throughout the day I'm good to go. When preggo with DS I fell down a flight of stairs and DS decided not to move for a few hours, so that resulted in a trip to the ER, but I'm really hoping nothing like that happens this time around.
I was told to do it and have been doing so every night after dinner since he's super active then. I have to count 10 kicks and record the time it takes. Usually, it's just a few minutes. I don't find it's that big of a deal.
I have GD so that may be why they're a little more adamant about it with me? I don't know. I do know they give the cards to every woman but I'm not sure if every doctor makes their patient do it. My doctor checks my card at my appointments along with my food log.
I was never told to count kicks. Besides with DS1, I never felt much movement. Now this one kicks and flips every minute of the day. (Anterior placenta in both cases.)
If I had to count kicks with DS1, I'd have been harassing the obgyn office every day.
I've never been advised to count kicks. My OB just asks if the baby's movement has been consistent.
Babies have distinct awake/asleep patterns even in utero, and you have to take that into consideration. Sometimes they're wild and crazy and sometimes they're napping so deeply that nothing you do can rouse them, and that's okay, as long as you can detect a pattern.

My OB has never had me to regular kick counts. Only to pay attention and if I notice a decrease in normal movement, to make more of an effort to lay down and "count" to make sure I feel movement.
My dr said I don't need to count kicks everyday or what not... But that I'll get used to baby's sleep/active pattern and if something is off, that's when I lay down and look for 10 movements in 1hour.
I never really did kick counts with DD... but I at the end I did start having to lie down + drink orange juice to feel her move. When I told that to my mother she made me go to the dr and they started inducing the next day b/c my blood pressure was out of whack. (37w4d)
Unless there was a concerning lack of movement my MW never told me to do them. And there was never a concerning lack of movement with DD, this one is always busy too.

At my last appointment my midwife said to only worry about doing them if I didn't feel like he was active like he should be. Otherwise she said not to worry about it.
Were you able to get the answers/opinions you were looking for?
No mention of kick counts from my last doctor/pregnancy, and none this time. The only people who have mentioned it, are the ladies here... and the "Future Moms Team" from my insurance company. Both questionable sources I do get the "baby moving around a lot for you?" "yup" discussion each visit.
I was told to do kick counts at my 28 wk appointment- 10 kicks in 2 hours. My ob said it is mainly just so if you do feel off or have concerns then you have documentation to show movement patterns. She wants me to do it 2x a day though.... And that is just too much for me, especially since she said to do nothing but sit there and concentrate on movement- no moving, watching tv, talking. Luckily I can feel LO moving pretty frequently and I can typically count 10+ in less than 10 minutes. I do try to document 1 per day if I remember and have my iPad near me, otherwise it just smile and enjoy feeling my baby. I'm thinking this OB has had a lot of calls from moms who have been worried about movement and this is her way of trying to decrease those calls/visits. Unnecessary visits to L&D are expensive and time consuming for both the mom and the doc so I can understand.
