June 2013 Moms

Have you heard of this?!

Have you heard of our used the Lunette menstrual cup? I have never heard of it but it was listed as a hot mom item at our local baby boutique. Part me things this is strange and gross and the other part thinks it's genius. Thought it would be fun to hear your opinions

  • I've tried something like it before. It's a really weird feeling like I thought for sure I was leaking all over the place but I wasn't. The box of the kind I got said that you can have sex with them but I don't really understand how that works. I just stick with tampons now. I guess my opinions is that I don't really see any benefits of this..

  • Oops @cl8badb didn't know it had been discussed! With work and no more MOTN feedings I'm way behind on my bumping ;)

I use the Diva Cup - it looks the same. I love it!

ETA - it has sizes by age/have kids vs flow (only difference I can see right away)

  • I tried this years ago and hated it. I mean, despised it. And I don't normally get grossed out. I usually am watching when I get blood drawn or get shots. But there is something not okay about rinsing out your menstrual blood in your sink. Gag!
  • Yes this ^^ also how's the cleaning process? I kind of want to give it a try but $40 for a maybe... I don't know!

  • I use the diva cup (I think it's cheaper than this one) and yeah it's kind of gross but you get used to it. I only use it during the day (I think you can wear it for more than 8 hours) so I only have to deal with washing it out at home. We think we bleed more than we do so even on a heavy day it's not totally full and it only leaks when you put it in wrong. With practice it becomes easy and worry free.

micabush: I'm gonna ask the TMI question.

I can't fathom the idea of fishing it out when you empty it. Is it gross? How bad is it? I'm tired of (wasting) money on tampons.

Western diva: It honestly isn't that bad IMO. It has a small tip that you pull on similar to a tampon string and slide a finger to break the suction. You dump it in the toilet and either wipe it out if not at home or wash it off. I use a little "toy" cleaner to clean it off. I really don't think it's much worse than a used tampon!

I like that I only have to empty it every 12 hours and it's never leaked. You can also insert the day you're expecting AF. It does take a little practice to insert properly, but after that it's quick and easy. I like the savings, less chemicals and less waste!

  • I wish I could use something like this since I hate pads but for some reason I can't stick anything up me myself- no tampons, etc. I have this weird phobia or something. Sorry for tmi.

  • @steamboat1679, I just giggled when I thought about that thing on the kitchen stove. If my husband ever knew what was going on he'd freak.

  • There's definitely a learning curve involved.  I used mine for a year and a half before I got pregnant (I got a Lunette size 1).  You might want to do a little research before you buy - I chose the Lunette because it's one of the shorter cups (the Diva is quite a bit longer) - and I found I have a relatively small vagina (very easy to reach my cervix when I'm on my period, and when I'm not for that matter), so it worked better for me.

Cleaning it out is messy, but I have to say once I got the hang of it it wasn't any grosser than taking a tampon out on a really heavy day.  Also, since you can have it in for 12 hours, I'd usually do one of my dumps in the shower (tmi? sorry folks) for ease of cleaning.

  • I think my sister and I are both going to give it a try you have convince me! My sister recently switch from tampons to pads because her cramps are so bad every time she uses tampons. I read this can actually help with cramps, what do you think ladies that use it?

  • Honestly I didn't really notice a difference in my cramps.  They've gotten worse as I've gotten older, and cups didn't seem to make a difference.  Others have had luckier experiences!

Instead also makes a reusable cup that's sort of floppier that is intended to be used for one cycle--it's a cheap way to try a cup if you're on the fence.  I think they're about $2-3.  I like cups because they can be left in for 12 hours at a time and offer the option of non-bloody period sex.

@bel194 It's not that different than sex with a diaphragm or cervical cap.
