Overwhelmed

So my edd is 10/09/14 and I had my first appt and everything looks great, now the scary news . I was just diagnosed on Thursday with malignant melanoma..... I have clinical anxiety and take mess for it however I can usually keep it under control and my ob told me I should not take it while pregnant but I am honestly freaking out over having cancer and need to either take my meds or have a glass of wine and I'm trying to figure out which one would be the lesser of the 2 evils. I sent my ob an email and am waiting to hear back ( it usually takes at least 24 hrs) anyone have an opinion on this? I am seriously having a hard time and don't have an appt with the oncologist until next Friday.... Does anyone on here know anything about melanoma? What I have looked up has freaked me out. Thanks for letting me ramble....

Re: Overwhelmed

  • I'm so sorry.  I wish I had more info, but I know nothing about melanoma.  But depending on what the anxiety med is it may not be so terrible.  Talk to your psychiatrist and OB about risk/benefit.
Son: Jackson, 11/02/06, stillborn due to PPROM and IUGR. Over the next ten years we had 9 miscarriages from 8-14 weeks. On May 18, 2016 my daughter, Ridley, was born. We're OADNBC.

  • So scary.  I'm sorry you're going through this!  I do know that I asked my OB about continuing to take anxiety meds and she said:  if I was able to wean myself, great.  But if it came down to me feeling anxious/miserable/stressed not being on them, that's worse than actually taking the med.  I'd say this is a situation where needing the anxiety med trumps not taking them.
I agree with this. You have to weight the options and in this situation it would be totally understandable that you are extra anxious. Maybe they can put you on a "more" pregnant-friendly medicine, like zoloft? Please PM me if you would like more info on depression/anxiety during pregnancy.

  • T&Ps for you. I have nothing to add. I hope that you and your doctors can work out a solution you are all comfortable with to address your concerns.
  • Wow I'm so sorry. I agree, take some pregnancy friendly meds. My doc recommends Prozac. I'm sure your oncologist will know more as well. Prayers for you!!!

  • Friday is a long time to wait to see the oncologist. That's tough. I don't have any words of wisdom for dealing with the anxiety, unfortunately.  I just had a mole removed from my back that wasn't cancerous, but the biopsy was atypical enough for my dermatologist to want to go ahead and remove it rather than wait until after October. Hopefully your melanoma is something that can be easily taken care of.

  • I am so sorry you are going through this. I agree that you have to weigh the risk/benefit of taking meds, and that there are some more pregnancy friendly meds out there than others. I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers for a quick, speedy, and full recovery for you.
  • No experience, but keeping you in my thoughts and prayers.

  • You are in my thoughts and prayers!!! So sorry you are facing this. I don't have any experience on the meds but hoping by now you have received a response from your doc. ((Hugs))
  • Very sorry to hear that, how scary.  I have been in remission (another cancer) almost 4 years and I have had some ups and downs with regards to my mood because of my health problems.  I took Zoloft during my last pregnancy, all through breastfeeding and will do it again this time.  I also took Klonopin on a very, very rare basis. Probably <5 times my entire pregnancy.

I'm not a person who believes in a bunch of fruity complimentary medicine stuff but I really did find that guided imagery and relaxation helped me relax during pregnancy.  I also have insomnia (which of course is worse in pregnancy) and to avoid taking meds for sleep, I used some relaxation MP3s and it really worked.

    Best wishes

  • I cannot thank you all enough for the sweet and encouraging words. My ob called in a mild fast acting med (Ativan) and it helped somewhat. It's been tough because as much as I was starting to get excited about this little bean I know have this overshadowing it.... Friday cannot come fast enough. Again thank you all ...it honestly brought tears to my eyes ....
  • I'm glad you were able to get in touch with your OB!
I was just going to suggest the Motherisk hotline 1-877-439-2744
You can ask any question about the effects of medication Etc and get up to date info from a nurse. It's based out of the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto and they specialize in this kind of research so I feel confident in their info and recommendations.
Good luck with everything. Sending positive, healthy, calm vibes your way! ;)
