NPR: Roast.

How do you make roast?  H accidentally got roast instead of steaks (we steal all our beef from his parents because they butcher half a cow every year) so now I'm attempting to make a roast but I have no idea what I'm doing and there are so many more ways to make a basic roast than I ever could have imagined.

Do you season it?  Do you cover it with foil while it bakes?

Re: NPR: Roast.

  • I prepare mine the same as @DHeckhart seasoning, roast potatoes and veggies in the crock pot comes out great. I usually buy the packet seasoning so I can't help you with what specific seasonings and amounts though.

  • Lots of wine. Pour yourself a glass of your favorite dry red, and pour the rest over the meat. ;)

...meat should be happily perched upon a bed of carrots, onions, celery (optional), and potatoes. Toss in a few garlic cloves too.

I usually sear the roast prior to putting it in the roasting pot, and I season with rosemary, salt, pepper, and thyme.

  • I am a huge fan of French Dip Sandwiches with roast---oh my goodness, I could eat them for years and they are easy since they are in the crockpot.

I have a family recipe that I use with peppercorns, bay leaf, soy sauce, etc., it is amazing! I found this one on Pinterest that is a bit simpler but looks good:

I've also been meaning to make traditional roast in a crockpot with this recipe but haven't yet:

    -1 packet Italian dressing mix

    -1 packet brown gravy mix

    -1 packet ranch dressing mix

    -1/2 cup water

Mix all ingredients together and pour over 2lb roast in a crockpot. Cook on low 8 hours.

    Good luck!

  • How long do you let it bake?  **it's about 3 lbs

Unfortunately I already got rid of my crock pot, so that's not an option.

But when you make the roast, do you let it cook beyond the time that it takes to be cooked?

I think I'm just going to give it away.  This is too much work for a meal I don't even really like. lol

I have made the traditional pot roast one and it is delicious!  It is usually my go-to one now!

  • First let me say you got my hopes up with your thread title.  I thought it was going to be a comedic "roast" of NPR.  Damn. :)

My mom always braised the crap out of a roast on Sundays in her crockpot.  It was okay, but I much prefer doing a dry roast, low and slow just until it's medium in the middle.  Just rub some oil on the outside, along with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and any other dried spices you like (thyme, rosemary, etc.).  "Oven-sear" it on a high heat like 400 for about 15 min, then lower the heat to about 250 and cook for a couple hours.  I pull mine out when the internal temp is right around 135F.  Let it rest 15 min then slice and serve with gravy and mashed potatoes.
