Babies: 9 - 12 Months

What are your LO eating at this age?

Just wondering what your Lo's are eating. I am afraid and still give her really mushy food, are you guys doing the same? She's hasn't tried any meat yet, unless it's the one in the jars. She's 10mos...

Not mashed foods include: peanut butter on toast, banana, avocado & mum mums

Mashed: sweet potato, peas, carrots, chick peas, chicken, apple sauce, pear

We gave him shredded pieces of lamb & ground beef, puréed chicken

My DS will be 10 months next week. It's scary but it takes time & confidence in both you & baby. They usually spit it out if they bite off a chunk that's too big or gag & gagging is normal & expected.
  • Everything I eat. Favorites are tortellini, applesauce, pineapple chunks, turkey sandwiches & homemade Mac & cheese ... My DS is 9 months and has been feeding himself since about 6 months and only has two teeth. ( he started solids at 4 mo to add calories to his diet because of my diet restrictions) He has preferred feeding himself since I first introduced puffs to him. I was nervous. However I let him teach me.

  • That's great, thanks ladies. I guess I have to stop being such a wuss:)
  • Whatever I eat! She loves toast, mac & cheese, grilled cheese sandwich, all meats, spagetti...pretty much anything she can put in her mouth. Very messy but fun!! She turned 9 months today & just cut her 1st tooth 2 days ago.
She wanted to feed herself at like 6 months. So I followed her lead. Both of my kids were like that soo I just went with it.

she never chokes or gags on it? I'm so terrified of that...
  • DD eats a lot of what we eat ... and has NO teeth!

Some examples of what she loves: chicken and ham (we cube or shred it), spaghetti/pasta, mandarin oranges, cheese (cubed or shredded), carrot coins (cooked and halved), peaches (diced), yogurt, oatmeal, banana (chunks), cheerios, puffs, crunchies (maple cinnamon and cheddar), etc.

She recently started refusing her 3rd foods, so from now on it's "people" food! She loves to eat. :)

Dd is almost 12 months now, but we did BLW starting at 6 months. She cut her first tooth at 9 months and still only has two at this point. She eats everything! Plum, peach, pears, avocado, blueberries, chicken, ground beef, pork, steak, grilled cheese, ham and cheese sandwiches, pasta, yogurt, oatmeal, corn, broccoli, beans..... Everything!

I cut things like sandwiches and meat into .5" wide strips so she can pick them up. I waited with blueberries until I knew she was doing well chewing. We started with softer foods like avocado and sweet potatoe. She was eating strips of roasted chicken by 7 months. She was also using a spoon (pre loaded) and a straw at 7 months.

Gagging is very common and it's how babies learn to eat. A baby's gag reflex is located on their tongue and moves back as they get older.

Thank you so much for this. I'll let you guys know how it goes. We did some small pieces of toast today, it went well:)
  • We did baby led weaning so no mush here.  My 11.5month old eats anything and everything.  She just pigged out at the seafood buffet last night.  My husband and I hate seafood so took her to ensure she still gets to try it.  I was gagging as I scrapped and cracked the various seafood open for her but she loved it.

She started peanut butter at 7months.  Meat and everything at 6...she LOVES any and all meats.  For months now she will chew down a strip of steak with the biggest smile.

She's 'ehhh' about eggs but eats them.  The only food that she hasn't had is honey.  and Anything dairy since she has a dairy intolerance.  Otherwise she eats anything we are having and she eats more than her fair share of it all.  She loves meal time and spends a good 30plus minutes eating away while my husband and I enjoy our meals.

We do a ton of laundry and have many baths but she eats like a champ.  She has 6 teeth now but has managed steak and everything else before she had any teeth.

All children will gag when they first start eating solids...in my experience it is worse when they are 1+ years old as that gag reflex is further back and they throw up more.  AT 6months the gag reflex is very forward on their tongue...they gag and figure it out very quickly with no stress at all.  I run a home daycare and have 5kids 11-15months old right now.  The 2 that are on purees are older and gag a ton right now on tiny bits because it's the first time they have had that chance...it'll come along but they do throw up when they gag.  My 3 that did BLW are a bit younger and get their foods in huge chunks and have yet to gag or throw up.

Google it, watch some youtube videos and go for it...the earlier the better.

Babies are amazing little beings and they will impress you greatly if you give them the chance (safely of course)!!

No she doesn't......knock on wood. She amazes me how she can eat everything.

  • We did BLW, so dd3 has been eating whatever we do from about 6 months on. She's almost 11 months now and has had pretty much everything but honey. She does gag sometimes, and I do have to remind her to take bites sometimes. Overall she does really well on her own.

  • She eats everything.  The only things we haven't given her yet are peanuts and chocolate.  She still eats baby food but eats whatever we are eating as well.  As soon as my dh or myself try to eat something her and the dog come running over to us because they want some.

  • Our twins would not eat puréed or mashed food, or baby cereal, at all. I thought they weren't ready for food or didn't like the taste. I was wrong, oh boy I was wrong. They just wanted regular food. At 9 months Evie stuck her hand in my bowl when I wasn't paying attention and ate a handful of rice, peas and carrots. After being thrilled and totally fine I tried little pieces of chicken. Since then both babies eat everything that I do. The only thing I don't give them is tomato sauces because they have sensitive skin like I did and they break out.

  • Our 9 month old son eats just about every veggie and fruit you can think of. He is allergic to dairy so I introduced tofu in place of cheese. It's a great texture to help you and little one feel comfortable with something one grade up from "mushy" foods.
  • She eats whatever we're eating.  There is a huge difference between gagging and choking.  DD has gagged a bunch but has never ever choked.  She cut 2 teeth at 7 months and just cut two more this week but has never had a problem eating whatever we're eating since 6 months.

  • Our LO eats everything we do, aside from sugary stuff like cookies, etc. I try to watch the food she eats that has a lot of salt and fat. She's a piggy and loves food. Somedays are better than others when it comes to her eating. Someday she lets me use a spoon, others she's all about doing it herself. Good luck and have fun!

We have tried several finger foods, but he won't really eat any of them other than teething biscuits and chewing on hunks of bread. We just make our own purees and do yogurt and oatmeal too.

Ingredients we have used in his purees are butternut squash, avocado, bananas, green beans, pears, sweet potatoes, apples, peas, turkey, white potatoes, mango, carrots, chicken, blueberries, cantaloupe, pork, brown lentils, broccoli, peaches, chickpeas, kale, kiwi, parsnips, beets, eggplant, cheddar cheese, squash, zucchini, cherries, and asparagus.

We started out doing single ingredient purees, but now they are usually three or four ingredient purees.
  • to those giving fruit like peaches, plums, cantaloupes, etc. how soft are they? what size pieces? my older son was eating cantaloupe the other day and it seemed kind of hard and i got scared. my 11 month old eats chicken, meat, roasted veggies, toast, eggs, etc.

I let the fruit ripen until it gives to gentle/moderate pressure. I give the whole piece of fruit after I take a small bite so she can get started on it easier ;)

Sometimes I buy frozen fruit for ds & I for smoothies. I just zap some in the microwave for dd & cut into small pieces. She loves that

  • So like shredded chicken, stuff like that is okay to give a 9 month old? My daughter always gags and it really scares me. Just need a little push I guess. I know she will be ok but I'm a first time mom and absolutely terrified. So grateful for this post.

Totally! Gagging is their body's way of telling them "Hold up - you're putting in too much, too fast."  It's to KEEP them from choking so it's actually a good thing.  Try to sit back and let her work it out :)  We give almost everything we're eating with the exception of stuff with honey and stuff with nuts (we have an allergy concern).

  • My daughter is 10 months and she gets 16 ounces of formula and 3 meals of baby food a day.. She has started to show a lot of interest in what my husband and I are eating.. She's had real bananas, mashed potatoes, small pieces of chicken, toast, yogurt.. Pretty much everything we eat.. She loves food :)
