Vitex (Chasteberry) herbal supplement

Has anyone else heard of or tried this? I have been taking it for about 2 cycles now. It is for menopause support, but. I use it for just hormonal support. There were several positive reviews for it from women taking it to help with fertility. Since taking it I have had regular cycles...prior to this had been having missed cycles. I have also been able to stop taking antidepressants, and feel like my mood is more stable. Just wondering if anyone else has heard of it or tried it? I take 2 500mg capsules each night. Can be bought at health food stores, or I just got a good deal on VitaminShoppe online.

  • I haven't taken it. Cheesypeas took it and said it messed her cycles up. I've heard good and bad things about it. I'm glad it's working for you :)

  • I took this to help with my amenorrhea.  I responded really well to it.  I went years without a cycle, and I began to have regular cycles once I started taking it.  I did not respond to Femara at all, and I responded, but not well, to Clomid.  As others have said, some respond well and some do not.  I firmly believe this herb helped with IF, but that is very anecdotal evidence.  I also made some major diet changes too.
Me: unexplained infertility - annovulatory DH: testicular cancer survivor!! TTC since June 2009 BFP May 11, 2012 EDD January 24, 2013 June 1, 2012 - first u/s, heartbeat 124 BPM!! Welcome to the world my miracle, we prayed and prayed for you, and we can't believe you're here!
  • I took it as a part of my herbal regime before I had my son.  I haven't started it yet this time because it's more medicinal and much stronger than the infusions.  Since I still BF, I was holding off on taking it.  My midwife didn't think it would be problematic to take it for a while while stiff BF'ing, but suggested I start with the infusions which are subtler.

But, I'm glad you posted this because I had thought about it recently and this post reminded me that I want to start taking it again next cycle.  Unless of course, I don't need to!  Haha, wouldn't that be great?!?!

  • I'm still nursing my son, and I'm taking Vitex because it's in my women's multi-vitamin.  I was a little nervous at first, but when I read up on Vitex, it's often recommended to nursing moms to help with milk production.  Vitex is roundly recognized as a fertility treatment in Europe where they're more apt to initially approach treatments from a functional medicine standpoint (lifestyle, diet, supplementation) than a medication/synthetic hormone approach like they are in the US.
