Re: Drugs! (OK, Vitamins)

  • I'm terrible about remembering to take them so I stopped trying. I will do my best to remember when baby arrives and I'm breastfeeding.

  • I take my prenatals. Its become such a part of my morning routine that I will probably continue as I plan to breastfeed.

    Pregnancy Ticker

  • This post just reminded me I put them in my pocket this morning to take with breakfast which I clearly never did.

I had to switch to gummy prenatal vitamins somewhere during the first trimester because they made me slightly less nauseous and my constipation also went away after that.

I don't enjoy them (I have no problem swallowing pills) but I am still having nausea issues at 23 weeks so I can't go back to the whole food based Rainbow Light brand of pnv's I was taking before the sickness kicked in just yet.

  • I was religious about taking them 1st tri. Now if I remember, I take them. But I have also been eating really well (for the most part) so not real concerned about missing them here or there now. I plan on getting back on track after LO is born (while nursing)

  • PNV and a DHA supplement (if I remember to take it). The iron in the prenatal definitely helps get me through the day.

  • I take a Flinstone vitamin every day (except when I forget) and will continue to do so through BF. Prenatals make me throw up :(

  • I never really took any. They all make me sick.

  • I take the New Chapter perfect prenatals (3x a day...SO hard to remember. But it helps that you don't have to take them on a full stomach) and a DHA supplement as well. I'll keep taking them through breastfeeding. It's kind of part of my routine now. The big downside is that they're really expensive and DH hates paying for them.

@joules235 @deepoceanmama I take the New Chapter ones too. They smell awful but are good quality and I like that they are also a probiotic.

I hate taking them (the smell makes me gag) so at the moment am doing mon-fri and giving myself a break in the weekends.

I also take a Vitamin D, Calcium, Magnesium & Zinc supplement and Wild Alaskan Salmon Oil.
  • I'm taking gummy pnv 99% of the time I'll keep them up after LO is born, at least for a few months.

  • @CDK211, that's too funny, my sister insisted I take them and bought me my first 6 month supply. I now have a monthly subscription to get them from Amazon (so I don't forget). They don't bother me at all.

I also take a DHA supplement which isn't bad either. It is strawberry flavored and I keep them both of them in the fridge. Nordic Naturals.
  • Yup, still taking mine every day with my myriad of fiber supplements and other doc-recommended stuff. I will continue the PNVs as long as I am BFing.

  • Everyday and through breastfeeding. My diet is just not balanced enough to get everything I need. I did switch to non-DHA vitamins though... those we're getting too darn expensive.
  • Been taking them well before conceiving an will continue throughout BFing. I take USANA PNV, fish oil, and calcium. I've never been constipated and I give that credit to the vitamins.

  • I still take them, in theory, but I need to take them right before bed otherwise I get sick and lately I just keep forgetting to take them.

  • I have tried every possible vitamin possible. The gummies worked in the beginning when the iron made me sick. Now I take a Kroger prenatal at night. The iron does seem to help me have more energy now that I can tolerate it.

  • Gummy PNV, calcium, iron

  • I'm attempting to continue taking my prenatals, but I end up forgetting about as often as I remember. It's good to know I'm not the only one forgetting, though...

Where is the option for "I fully intend to take them every day and while BFing but I am easily distracted by shiny things and forget a lot"?

    THIS! Exactly this.

  • I take PNV's when I remember to.

  • I realized recently while buying more PNV that I've been on them for more than 4 years straight now (between TTC, PG, BFing).  With this PG, I am also taking calcium and selenium supplements to hopefully help prevent Pre-eclampsia (had it with DS, and some research shows that both these supplements may help prevent it).

  • My SO gives them to me at night so I don't forget. Well if I remember I take them before he comes to bed but he always checks. Good daddy!!

Mine are a generic gummy vitamin. I've never done well with vitamins so these work great for me. I started a month before getting prego and will probably continue for a while after baby too. That's my plan at least.
  • I take mine everyday. I ended up having to buy one of those 7 day pill cases cuz some days I couldn't remember if I took it or not. My DH teased me that I'm a little old lady with my pill case!! But hey now I get my pnv everyday!!!
  • I set my PNV on the bathroom counter right by my toothbrush so that I see it and remember. I've been so good ever since I moved it out of the drawer!

  • I read some interesting research awhile back that indicated, past first trimester, you are actually taking the vitamins more to support your health than the babies.

The reasoning given was that the body places a higher priority on providing nutrients to the fetus than to the mother. So, for example, if the developing fetus needs calcium, it will just take calcium from the mother's reserved calcium stores (including the bones - hello, early osteoporosis).

I can not vouch at all for the science here - but it managed to scare me right back into taking my prenatals!
  • I love the pnvs. I grew up in a vitamin household ( took 5 or 6 various pills daily plus more if I was sick) so one pill is great. Plus my nails are now superman strong.
