Should I be worried?

I was reading the post about what peoples LOs can do, and my DS doesnt do a lot of them. A big one that worries me is that he doesnt say words. He "talks" but its still just baby talk. Though he does point and shake his head no to communicate with us. So I guess my question is, developmentally what should he be doing at this age? He will be 18 months old on March 5. TIA

Re: Should I be worried?

  • I am a fan of EI evals to help ease your mind or get some help with reaching milestones. I would bring it up with the pedi at the 18mo appt that you are interested in an evaluation. I don't think it is something to worry about. He will talk but there is no harm in getting some extra help. Plus if he has a wordsplosion before your eval, you can always cancel the appointment. That is what my brother did. His 2 year old was not talking much at all and still basic one word responses so they scheduled an EI evaluation. Sure enough, the week of his appointment he starting talking in full sentences and hasn't stopped talking since.

  • I think your first step is to address things with the pediatrician. Colby is doing this thing where he says a word for a few days and then won't say it anymore. He only has a handful in regular rotation.

  • DD doesn't really talk either.  She is a pro at saying "uh oh" but most of her other words are only clear to me (mama, dada, moo, meow, hi, bye).  However, she is very receptive.  If I ask her to go and get a certain book, she can go find that specific book.  She follows a lot of other directions too. Most of other communication comes from nodding, grunting or babbling.

  • Jenmbott, she sounds exactly like my DS. Thank you guys, you have been a big help to ease the worry. I just get so worried when I see other kids doing so much more than he is doing.

  • I wouldn't worry either. DD has a few words she uses consistently, a few she once used and has seemingly forgotten and a whole bunch that she never says.

  • My lo is 17 mo and she says a few words but mostly baby talk. I wouldn't worry.
