Babies: 3 - 6 Months

travel with baby

Hi everyone,
MH and I are planning on traveling to New Zealand when out LO is about a year.
Are we crazy to plan on taking him on such a long flight?
any tips from parents who have traveled with babes is greatly appreciated. What did LO sleep in once away? Did you buy or bring a car seat? Did the time difference completely ruin your baby's schedule?
TIA.

Re: travel with baby

  • The biggest tip is that your baby needs their own seat on the flight and needs to right in his or her car seat while the fasten seatbelt sign is on :)

  • @elmoali, since he's under 2 we have the option to pay a child's fare (about 3/4 of adult fare) or he can sit on our laps and cost 10% of an adult fare. So you recommend him having his own seat?
  • Absolutely!  In a plane crash from the air, there's nothing to be done but most plane accidents are survivable because they happen during take off or landing or are due to turbulence.  If you think about the speed and mass of a plane and consider what that impact would be like if, say, the plane veered off the runway and into trees, that's at least as bad or worse than a car crash and we always secure kids in the car.

Unfortunately, laws and airlines aren't in sync with what's safe so lap children are allowed but it's very, very unsafe.

Edit: Well look at this lol.  I came back to this thread this morning to realize my pre-schooler was trying to talk to you all.  I'm going to leave it here as a warning to your FTMs.  Always lock your computer LOL

  • This just happened this week.  The baby got lucky, things could have been much worse.  https://gma.yahoo.com/baby-sent-flying-five-hurt-plane-hit-turbulence-125707155--abc-news-topstories.html

Also, there have been cases where babies were killed that may have survived if they had been in a carseat on the plane.  https://articles.latimes.com/1989-12-07/news/mn-248_1_infant-safety-seats

Also, do you REALLY want to hold your child all the way to New Zealand?  A one-year-old will most likely fight you.  Think about trying to eat or drink or sleep.  Even if your husband takes an even turn it will be very difficult.  The carseat will be a familiar place for your child.  Just make sure it is FAA approved (most are), you can find that information in the manual and on a sticker on the side.  Use an American based airline so you are guaranteed being able to take the seat in the cabin.  The FAA requires that you be allowed to use it provided it is FAA approved and you purchased a ticket for your child.  If it does not fit in your seat they have to move you to another seat in the same class.  You can go to seat guru to find out plane seat measurements to make sure you seat will fit to save you some headaches when flying.  This way you have a carseat at your destination.  You don't want to check the carseat as baggage because it can be lost just like any other luggage or damaged and then you cannot use it.
  • Just want to echo pp on the importance of baby being in a carseat vs on your lap. It is recommended by the AAP as well the FAA.
