Anyone else light headed or fainting?

So this afternoon I was at DDs gymnastics invitational and was standing for 1.5 hours. At the end of it...I suddenly felt light headed and my ears started ringing...a sure thing that I was about to pass out. Luckily, DS was with us so I sat down on the floor with him and was able to "cover up" that anything was wrong. It passed after I sat there for a while. Only thing I (and my father who is a family practitioner) can come up with is that I was standing too long. Anyone else have this? What did you do to prevent it? I'm a teacher so standing is part of the job. Didn't have this with my other pregnancies! TIA! Hope everyone enjoyed their weekend!

  • Make sure you're drinking/eating enough, walking around and try not to lock your knees. I'm a teacher too and the standing thing is starting to get to me.

  • I had this last pregnancy and again this time when I'm on my feet a lot. For me, it's due to low BP while pregnant.

  • That happened to me during my first pregnancy. When I called the doctor he said it was lack of water
  • I never had this with DD but I have had near fainting spells this time around. My midwife said my blood pressure is a little lower than I usually am so it could be that or lack of drinking enough water/eating healthy foods. When I start to feel starry I lay down, drink a bunch of water, and eat some veggies or good healthy food. Mine hits me a lot sooner than an hour and a half though, you did well!

  • I had it in my first trimester. Haven't felt too dizzy since though.. I think I wasnt eating enough though.

I get this every other day and I even have it sitting down. Could be several things:

    Dehydration
    Iron levels
    Blood sugar
You need to get your blood pumping again

Mention it a your next appointment so they can check your iron. Keep sugary snacks and a bottle of water on hand. Try to move around and not stand still for too long. Also wear layers you can remove quickly, as I find it happens a lot when i over heat. Don't be afraid of having to lie down in public. I've thrown myself across train seats before now. It's much better than hitting the deck.

  • I haven't had this during pregnancy, but you can absolutely get faint from standing. I remember from my choir days, that they always told us not to lock our knees and to lightly bounce or shake out our legs every little bit to keep blood flowing. As PPs have said, dehydration or lack of iron can exacerbate this. I'd say if you know you're going to be standing around, bring a snack and water, keep your legs moving, or even bring one of those fabric foldy chairs so you can take breaks.

  • Yep, for me it was low iron. I would get it standing or sitting down. Maybe ask your OB to check your iron levels.

  • I second what many of the other PPs have said, especially to make sure you're not locking your knees. I watched a kid standing in formation during one of our promotion ceremonies fall flat out and not remember a thing.
Also, I don't know if this will help you or not, but when I was in school one of my teachers was pregnant and standing was getting to her also. She would bring her rolling chair to the front of the room and teach from there a bit. Or if she needed to write on the board for us to take notes or something she used the projectors that you put the clear laminated paper on and she just sat next to that and wrote the notes on the projector for us to copy. I know that may only work if you're with older kids, but I'm sure if you explained a little bit they'd be very understanding. If they're younger I don't know if that would help you at all though. Sorry!!
