Breastfeeding

medela calma

I'm going to try to breastfeed (we'll see how it works out. Didn't go do well with our first, and thus time we're expecting twins) and would like a bottle that's compatible with my pump and that will help avoid nipple confusion. Has anyone tried the medela calma bottles, and if so, what did you think of them?

Re: medela calma

  • DS hated them. He loved the plain nipple that came with my medela pump though and they considerably cheaper than the calma.

  • DS liked it (though it took him time to get used to it) but it made an unholy mess. Milk everywhere. Though, this is exactly his problem and why he can't nurse - he can't maintain suction. So I think it's him and not the bottle.

  • DD is 3, and we used the regular medela bottles and nipples with her. I guess after these reviews we'll plan on doing the same for the twins, especially since we have a few of her old ones hanging around. (We have a bunch of 2 ounce for sone reason but seriously have just 4 4 ounce and 3 8 ounce right now. That's just 2 feeds for twins. Heaven forbid we go to dinner and a movie or something!). BRU has modela bottles and supplies buy 1 get 1 half off until the middle of march, so I figure now is the time to get them.
  • Both of my twins use them without a problem. We still need to do a paced feed as they have figured out how to suck the milk down fast even with the special nipple.

  • Our LC said def do not use them. We were recommended Playtex Natural Latch and have had no issue with nipple preference.

  • My DD used them without a problem, and I feel like it kept her from preferring the bottle over nursing. After she got good at latching, we started using regular medela. I had more of those.
  • Ds has used them fine a few times. We regularly use tomme tippee and did not have any confusion (he's 5 months now) I just got the adaptors to fit my medela pump.

Why did she say not to use them? I'm curious because the LC I saw recommended them.

  • I use the medela calma with my 2 month old who has been getting 1 bottle a day for the past 4 weeks. We tried avent natural but after 2 nights he only drank 1 oz total. LC recommended calma and he's been better with that. I actually screw the calma nipple into the ameda bottles from my pump. I like that I can do that and that he has to work a bit to get milk because he can get lazy at times and would definitely overeat.
  • Another quick question: do the calma nipples fit onto the Medela bottles that come with the pump?
  • I tried the calma nipple with my daughter. I thought it would be great bc it really mimics the breast. I thought the milk poured out way to fast so I switched her to the regular medela bottles. She would take the regular but was always really fussy afterwards. We just recently switched to the tommy tippie anti colic bottles. She seems to do much better with these. The shape of the nipple is nice and I think it gives her added comfort.

Yes they fit. I love this nipple. It's all we use for our daughter.
  • We bought one and used it once. I don't think it was all that great and we introduced a different bottle around 6 weeks. DS does fine with any bottle. We use Tommy Tippee and Born Free with no problems and he nurses like a champ without issue.

Because it encourages the baby to need to create a vacuum suck which is not how babies nurse on a breast. If babies are sucking the "wrong" way, it can hurt your nipples when they bf. Medela advertises it as "breast like," but it's not.
