Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

My twins won't use a sippy cup!

I have 12 mo old BG twins and they refuse to use a sippy cup! I have purchased different kinds/brands of cups with no success. They just shake them or throw them. I really don't know what to do to make them want to use them. I have read that they should have been using them for a couple months already. Anyone have any suggestions?

Re: My twins won't use a sippy cup!

  • We cut the bottle off cold turkey on our daughter's 1st birthday. She took the disposable ones and straw ones.

    Good luck.

  • Have you tried these NUK ones?  My littlest had toruble with every cup but these.  We have transitioned over to regular sippy cups now.

  • We finally got our b/b twins to use sippies by using NUK, not the ones above (I can't seem to find them on Amazon...), but similar with a softer spout and handles. We just kept trying and trying, and eventually they caught on. After that we had a couple rough days as we dropped bottles and transitioned to full time sippy cup use, but you just have to grit your teeth and power through. And don't sweat not having them on sippies yet. They're only 12 months old. It's a good time to start. So, don't feel guilty! It's hard to make big changes like this with two babies. Good luck, mama!

  • DD preferred straw cups for months before she started using sippys.

You can also skip all together and go to cups if you don't mind the mess :).  But with twins you would be my hero if you were willing to take on that challenge! :)

  • We started with a doidy cup because she seemed to want to drink just like Mommy and Daddy. Yes it was super messy at first ( and would be much worse with twins I'm sure) but this cup is slanted so it seemed easier for her to get water without having to tilt it so much.

  • Don't beat yourself up. I have triplets and we had to pick one battle at a time, so sippy cups came a little later. We gave all different kinds of sippy cups with water in them as a toy, they played and practiced with them. Slowly, we transitioned them/substituted them for one bottle at a time, it was 'later' than what people would say you should but b/c mine were preemies - I don't think they were ready at 12 months anyways - when they are ready they will do it. Good luck
  • Ditto what theresat858 said. Supply cups aren't a step down they're just a convenience. Go to the cups!

  • Aww thanks everyone for the great advice. I have literally been beating my self up because the packages of some of these cups say 4/6 months! My BB is just having the hardest time taking to them and is getting physically hysterical when it's presented. Mommaoftrips I am definitely going to introduce them as a "toy" tomorrow! That is a neat idea and I never would have thought about trying to make a cup fun to make them take to it. CamoBride that looks like a cup my BG will like! I will try all the suggestions...thank you!
