Coconut oil

Sorry if this has been asked already. Ive read that coconut oil massaged on the perineum can help reduce the risk of tearing. Anyone have experience w this? If so, who applies it and when? Do i do it in the weeks leading up to labor or during labor? Can DH do it or does doc? Im not having a doula even tho i want one!

Re: Coconut oil

  • There are three takes on perineal massage: 1. that it doesn't make a difference 2. that it prevents tearing by conditioning the tissues 3. that it prevents tearing by getting you accustomed to the sensations of stretching and pressure on the tissues to prevent a stress response and allure a calm, relaxed, "opening" response. I tta w the latter. The coconut oil, in that case, would be for lubrication. You can do it yourself if you can reach, or your so can so it. Be sure to look up directions so you use the most beneficial method, and to prevent any problems.

  • My husband did it, but not often enough. The nurse also did it while I was pushing. I still had some tearing, but it wasn't severe. I think it might not have happened if we had practiced the massage more often.

  • This is awesome, thank u!!
  • Coconut oil is great to use, especially before labor. The vitamins and nutrients in the oil work wonders on making your skin down there full of the same vitamins, making it healthier, more expandable, etc.

Anything with Vitamin E in it is also a good option to use for perenial massages.

Also...I recommend taking Coconut oil too orally...just about a teaspoon of it a day (I take mine when I take my Vitamin D since D is a fat soluble vitamin)...and it gives me a nice natural boost of energy.

Obviously I'd make sure to use to different jars or containers of coconut oil if you're going to eat it AND use it down there :-)
