Head, Neck, Chest Pain - help?

I'm having a really weird sensation in the back left side of my head, down my throat and into my upper chest. Its uncomfortable, and feels almost like a tightness. When I take deep breaths it sends a slight pain upwards. I really have no idea how else to describe it. I can't find anything on google. Has anyone experienced this?

It's been like this for over an hour and it's getting slightly worse.

Re: Head, Neck, Chest Pain - help?

  • Could it be strained muscles? I've pulled muscles in my chest before and it felt tight and achy. If it persist much longer/gets worse, I'd probably get it checked out.

  • I haven't had pain in all those areas at the same time, but when I have had localized pain I usually can recall straining my neck or something at some point. For me it happens after sleeping in a funny position. If I did have pain like you are describing though, I would probably call the after hours number of my doctor and tell them about it. It doesn't hurt to see what they think, and they may want you to get it checked out if it doesn't improve soon.

  • How are you sleeping? Are you using angled pillows/sleeping with your shoulder on a pillow? etc?

  • It really doesn't feel like a muscle, because my head hurts like a headache, and the pain going down my neck almost feels like a lump in my throat. It's so hard to describe.

I don't remember sleeping on it funny, or straining it in any way. I was cooking dinner when the feeling started.

It's probably nothing. I've just had a bad day. Bad ultrasound results this morning and then bad blood work back for my husband. Maybe it's just stress.

  • Could it be ear pain and your lymph nodes, not a headache? If it's getting worse, I'd probably shoot a call in. You might have a minor infection that could be causing your symptoms.

  • I would call your doc just to be safe if it doesn't go away. Any tightness in your chest at least deserves a call. Sounds like you had a stressful day and could be a tension headache but stress can also cause chest pain and that's nothing to mess with
  • So I was really focused on the other shit going on yesterday so I sobbed myself to sleep last night before actually calling the doctor. I think you guys might be right about the muscle because I'm feeling the same pain this morning, but it's more in my back rather than my chest, and it does sort of feel like a muscle ache now.

@katemr1146, it could be stress related. Tension headaches can be a very real thing and tension in general could be causing a sore neck and shoulder . You have a lot going on, do you think it could be related?

i was thinking along the same lines.

also, have you tried using a different pillow? i find that the wrong pillow can cause me intense neck/head/shoulder pain, so maybe try something new. i also like to drink a non-caffinated sleepy time tea before bed to help me relax.

    be well.
  • I would try taking some tylenol to see if that helps with the pain at all. I'm sorry you're going through all of this right now :( Hugs.
  • So it was feeling a bit better until my mom called and got me all worked up again about our diagnosis - now it hurts again. Maybe it is a tension headache then. I guess I've never had one before?
