MOTN

Whose up?

My LO has decided today that she's gonna change her entire schedule. Not sure if we've reached a developmental milestone or what but today she was 100 times more interactive, seemed to be more in the quiet alert phase and only had two meltdowns.
The bad side was she went to sleep at 7 pm, of course I assumed she would wake up one more time so I could change/swaddle her. Good thing I fell asleep too because here we are at 1:25 am and someone is just now starting to fall back asleep after waking up at midnight.
1 of 2 things will happen. She will give a good stretch of sleep and just wake up at our usual 5:45 or because it's been almost two hours since the start of our last feeding she will finally fall asleep just to wake up in 30 minutes.

Re: MOTN

  • Ugh, I hope you get some sleep now @slmille4!

I'm up nursing. After almost 4 weeks of getting up for every feeding and not being able to nap at all during the day (see also: 4 kids) is really getting to me. I am sooo tired. I'm considering switching to formula or even supplementing 1 MOTN feeding just to get some effing sleep.

In other news, DD2 has been so alert and awake for longer stretches lately and I love it!

  • @mrsjenni. I would be going crazy with 4 kids! I'm also thinking for next baby going formula, but then keep thinking as much as MOTN feedings suck going downstairs and prepping a bottle could make them longer, because realistically even though DH would prolly help with a feeding, there would still be the other one or two in the MOTN that I'd do.

  • Up but gonna try to sleep now that DS is down. I think he has reflux? He didn't spit up today, but yesterday he did a lot. Right now he's making these pitiful grunting noises, and arching his back. And he's waking up more and crying sometimes when I lay him down. I wish I knew how to make him more comfortable...

  • I'm here. M scared the bejeezus out of me this evening by choking on stomach acid when i laid him down to change clothes. I couldn't decide after if it is better for him to sleep in the crib, where he's flat on his back but on the angelcare monitor, or in the bouncer next to me so he's upright. I settled on the bouncer next to the sofa for tonight.

Currently he in my arms semi-asleep. Hoping we'll go back to sleep until at least 5 am

Prepping the bottle, feeding it, burping, changing and getting them back to sleep is still less time than a nursing session (for us anyway). It takes 10mins for DD to drink a 4oz bottle but our average nursing time is 30-40 mins (about 15-20 on each side) plus changing, etc.

Also, it's every other feeding with DH's help, so you're getting up once, maybe twice on a bad night. Trust me, it's much easier, IMO.

  • And.... Up again. I was right. Ready to eat 30 min later. Hoping I don't have to do an hour long calming session after this time.

  • We are up! Dd was diagnosed with milk protein allergy on Tuesday , and so I've cut all milk and soy/protein from my diet. What a difference it has made! But, now any patterns that had started are now different. Dd first stretch has now been 4-5 hours, instead of 3. Now if I could get this next stretch to be the same, we'd all be happy!
  • I'm up! Haven't gone to bed actually. I want to, but I have to pump in 20 mins so I don't see a point in trying. @Rojovol34 I'm super jealous that your lo will sleep for a four hour stretch. I would kill for that! Gavin is almost 7 weeks old and still gets up every hour and a half to two hours....

  • Dh woke me up to pump while he gives a bottle. He's mad J is wide awake, apparently he always falls right back to sleep with no effort on DHs part. Makes me LOL. Um, feeding him isn't the hard part that makes me want to cry in the middle of the night. Welcome to my life, and now do it again in like an hour. ;)

  • Up nursing DS2, he slept from 10:30 until 2:45 and so did I. Feeling better!

Unfortunately, looks like he might have pink eye. This evening he had a red eye and crusty goop. Will call pedi in the morning.
  • I am sitting here with the kid sleeping on my chest debating on what to do. If I put him down in the pack and play, he wakes himself up almost instantly. I don't want him in our bed. Thanks to my husband who lets him sleep on his chest, I am up every hour now...
  • I have been struggling a bit. I've gotten hardly any sleep the past few days and it's starting to get to me. I don't know if this is her 3 week growth spurt (that I keep thinking is happening) or if she is having some type of problem with my milk but we are going to see her doctor tomorrow to hopefully get it sorted out.

We tried giving her some formula last night just to see how she would respond to it. She hates the bottle so she didn't drink much. But She ended up sleeping from about 11-330 which is longer than I've had for the past couple of nights. I'm feeding her now and hoping that she will go back to sleep so that I can get some more rest.

@mrsjenni - that sounds tough. Lack of sleep is so hard. Hang in there mama. I hope it gets better for you soon.

@slmille4 - I think our LOs get together and discuss how they are going to sleep for us each night lol

  • I'm up. B just slept from 10-3. Good job, dude. I'm hoping this doesn't turn into a 2 hr nursing session like the past two nights. We shall see.

In other news, we cannot seem to get the temperature right in his room. It's either way too hot or freezing. It's an old house (115 yrs) and with the sub zero temps, the cold side of things really is just too cold, so I opt for too warm but run a cool mist humidifier and fan to try to move the cool air around. But it's frustrating because it's such a delicate balance.
  • @ksonne Squirt some milk in his eye! I posted earlier that I have lovely pink eye and am using breastmilk to help and it's really made a difference!

Up to nurse again. Last night, DS slept from 930-230, so I thought we had turned a corner. Not so much. Was up at 12, now again 330. And we moved him to his own room, so I now actually have to walk to get him. :(
  • Up after getting to bed at 11. It's been a few nights since that happened. Got almost four hours of sleep again. Hoping DD gies back to bed as easily as she did earlier.

Anyone else have gale force winds? Our kitchen exhaust fan keeps rattling and it's kind of creepy.

@peanutmuse we have heat issues too but our house is poorly insulated as its not anywhere near as old as yours. Each floor is a different temp no matter what temp we set the heat on. It's a pain.

  • I'm up pumping after just giving a bottle.  LO last ate at 1:00, so we're on the every three hours schedule still.  @kosbo06 - I'm in the same boat at 7 weeks today.  I think the longest he's gone start-to-start is 4 hours yesterday but of course that's only if he falls asleep in my arms so that doesn't help this tired momma!

  • DS woke up at 3:45. He is restless after eating. I need to pump, but he won't let me put him down. Since I start getting ready for work at 5, I'm up for the day. So awesome. 4.5 hours of sleep overnight and not consecutive. I can't wait til DS regularly puts in a stretch of sleep longer than 3 hours at night.

  • Up with DS. There are really strong thunderstorms coming through right now and I'm nervous to put hmm back in his crib only for him to wake up at he first crack of thunder.

  • @tarajeanette. My pedi said she was ok with paci from day 1, I guess sleeping with a paci also decreases risk of SIDS.

Up again, most likely for the day. Would have preferred a little longer but ih well. LO will usually nurse now and be up for an hour then am sleep for an hour. But again she's throwing me for a loop this week. I miss the four hour stretches she gave me at the beginning of the week.
Since this is the time I'll be getting up for work I can't be too upset, although tonight I'm not gonna let her sleep from 7 to midnight.

  • Up again here too! For the day now, of course.

  • I'm up! We are in our 6 week growth spurt (though technically LO is 7 weeks). This means feeding sessions are minimum 1hour, more likely 1.5.  Tonight he went 7:30-11:30, got the bottle from daddy, but was hungry again an hour later.

I've decided that once I put him down I have to leave the room so I don't hear the grunting and squeaking. Oh, and DH is snoring like a freaking lumberjack. No sleep for mama!

  • What a good night DD finally had. We got a long first stretch (a good 4 hours) and then we had two 3 hour stretches in between the next two feedings. It feels so good! The last two days have seen feedings every hour and a half or so so this is a very welcome change.

  • Reading this thread makes me want to cry. Seems like most are getting a good four, or at least three hour stretch. I got two max tonight and a few ones. Horrible. My first was like this too. I've read all the sleep books and do it all "right". I don't know why I get babies that hate to sleep.

  • Awake pumping. Baby is asleep. This is so wrong.
    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • @ababymaybe sorry for the unsolicited advice, but have you tried marathon feeding sessions in the evening? We didn't with our first and he was awake every two hours. With this one, we give her 2-3 oz bottles of pumped breastmilk every 90-120 mins in the early evening, then a 3.5 oz bottle of formula at 10:30. We typically get 5-7 hours of sleep thereafter.

And I was right. It was a rough night. He was up anywhere from every 30 minutes to 2 hours. Mama is tired.

Hopefully DS1 is a well behaved toddler today.

Ugh I'm sorry! We went through that the last couple of nights too but last night was better. Here's hoping that it is just their 3 week growth spurts and we can get better sleep now!

  • @growingmybun - we usually do a bit of a cluster feed in the evening (heck his whole day is a cluster feed) but I don't think it helps. He's gaining a ton (up 2lb at 3 weeks) but he is also nursing really often to make that happen :/ I should try a bottle of BM to top him off at bedtime.. If he doesn't take it then DH can use it for a waking.

  • We had a miserable night last night, and are in for a miserable day today too, but I know the cause. I don't care that 45 years ago you fed your kid ice cream at a month old -DONT DO IT WITH MY KID!!!!!
@jessicabcairns WT actual F. Please tell me you're kidding and no one actually fed the baby ice cream! That is horrible!
    image
    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • @ThankfulSnail - nope not kidding at all. DH's grandparents put a bit on his lips because he was fussy and I was in the bathroom. We talked to the doctor this morning, and the only issue should be an upset tummy - which I've been dealing with since last night. Poor baby wants nothing but to be held as he fusses, pukes, and poops. :(
Poor guy! Also, there's no way their baby was fine when they did that, either, no matter what they say. My guess is after 45 years they forgot how old their babies were when they started introducing solids and just assumed they knew best. I would be so livid if someone did this! I hope LO feels better soon!
