Nanny Share - How Much?

I'm new to the world of nanny sharing so I'm hoping a few of you can enlighten me. Our sitter just told us earlier this week that she's moving to another state. Extremely sad over this, but I need to get over it ASAP and find child care in the next 2 weeks. My sister also happens to be looking for a nanny and we discussed doing a nanny share at her house. We only live minutes away from each other.

She currently has a lead that is available for the days and hours we need. However, the nanny didn't give us a rate, but rather asked us what we'd be paying. I have no idea! For those with experience with nanny sharing, what do you think is ideal for our situation? We live in the Chicago suburbs.

M-F from 7:30am - 5pm (so 9.5 hours total each day)
8yo and 6yo are in school from 7:30-3:30
3yo, 9 month old, and 7 month old will be the main kids she'd be watching

Also, how should the costs be split between me and my sister? I only have the 7 month old, but sister would be hosting at her house. Anything else I should look into?

TIA!

Re: Nanny Share - How Much?

  • Care.com will give you an idea of the going rate in your area for nannies. Things you need to consider are you paying above the table?  I was going to share one with my sister-in-law and her nanny candidate was not willing to allow me to do that so I said no.  I was willing to pay the going rate for legal nannies but she was not looking at it that way, which I found fishy.  She wanted me to pay her less no paper trail.  Where I live for three kids it would be around 22.00 to 25 an hour with an additional ten percent or so going out to pay the employer tax, along with workers comp insurance costs and any insurance costs the Nanny wanted and we agreed to.  When we were looking at it our kids were only going to be together one day as we both only needed part-time care.  I was going to pay for my days and she would for hers and we would have split the joint day down the middle even though I have two and she has one.   Most nannies don’t charge a fee per child so even though she has two and you have one for full time care you are still saving money.  Where I live the difference in cost between one child and three is a couple of dollars an hour so maybe $20.00 a day total.  If my sister-in-law had suggested splitting by three I would have said no because I would not have been saving much it would have been better for me just to hire my own nanny.   As for travel it sounds like you live close so I don’t think she should pay less due to that but maybe she coverers more the worker’s comp policy if needed given it is her house.  Given she is close would it be possible to have the nanny come to your house too and split the days or one week on one week off? I think a good starter point is comparing hourly rate for one child vs. three along with what nannies charge for after school care.  Maybe split the cost for the three down the middle and your sister covers any additional costs related to the school-age children.  With that many kids it sounds to me almost like a home daycare situation, which where I live runs on average 175 to 200 a week so think about that too.  It is a lot of kids and driving babies around to pickup kids for the convenience of a nanny who is not coming to your home.
