Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

safe stool for helping in the kitchen?

Hi fellow Moms -

I have a 17-month old who loves to be in the kitchen with me while I'm cooking dinner. She likes to see what I'm doing on the counter while chopping, etc. I would like to find a safe way for her to stand or sit on something that allows her to be counter height. I have seen step stools with sides, but the cheapest I can find is around $150. I was hoping to find a cheaper option. :) I don't feel comfortable just letting her stand on a regular chair at the counter quite yet.

Just wondering what others have used for toddlers around this same age?

  • Check craigslist for a Learning Tower.  In our area you can usually find a used one for a reasonable price.  One Step Ahead also has their own version of this that is not too expensive if you catch it during one of their big sales.

  • I got the learning tower on Craigslist for $60. We use it ever day.
  • I was wondering about this myself. Thanks! I'll keep an eye out on sales and Craigslist

  • We probably will get a learning tower later down the road.  Right now, some days I'll plop DS in his high chair and pull him up close to the counter so he can watch me cook (free cooking show, eh?).  We also have a kitchen peninsula and we have attached a clip-on chair there.  So sometimes I put DS in the clip-on chair.  He is only 15m and the learning towers I've seen tend to have big openings and I'm just worried that DS will fall off and injure himself.

  • We got my daughter a laerning tower for her birthday as well as her own sets of cooking stuff. She loves it. She calls it her princess tower. Best purchase so far.

  • We strap DS's booster onto the bar stool.  He has to be seated but he can still see me and help with doing things on the kitchen island.  So far he loves it.
  • Thanks all for your suggestions!
  • It's not exactly what you're looking for, but we have this stool in our kitchen https://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/60178887/
BEKVÄM Step stool IKEA Solid wood is a durable natural material. Hand-hole in the top step makes the step stool easy to move.
We've had it forever because I'm short and use it to reach out top shelves, but it's also THE perfect height for DS to use to 'help' me cook and to wash his hands, etc.
