What's your back up meal for LO?

My ped said do not cook several things if they do not like out dinner. But I have to give them something else! What do you give your little one for dinner when they don't like what's served? I've been doing yogurt or cottage cheese or pouches, any other easy ideas?

  • Scrambled egg, grilled cheese or string cheese. All served with fruit and a sliced cucumber, because that is the only vegetable she'll eat. She refuses all of our dinners, unless it's lasagna, so she pretty much gets one of these three for dinner nightly.

  • One suggestion i read was to not make anything different, but make sure there's at least one thing at the table they like. Bread or fruit or something. Then if they don't like the main dish they still have something to eat, but also don't think that you'll make whatever they want.

  • I agree with the concept of making sure at least one aspect of the meal is something I know they like so no matter what they will have eaten something. I also try to make sure if they didn't eat a good breakfast or lunch that I serve something they love for dinner such as mac n cheese, rice and beans, grilled cheese, pita and hummus or grilled cheese.

  • I don't make a backup meal. If he doesn't eat what I make, he doesn't eat. I am not a short-order cook and he is certainly not starving.
  • B also gets what is served but tweaked a bit to her preference, like with cheese or something. But if all that is refused we go to the pouch stash. But if she refuses that too, and sometimes she does, then I know she's not hungry and we move on.

This. DD's in the 97th percentile for weight, so we're not too worried if she doesn't eat much now and again.

This. She is not generally a picky eater and if she is not eating something it is normally because she is in a mood and wants to fight me on something. When she is hungry, she will eat. And she always gets at least one good meal a day.

  • We don't make a separate meal for DS - he eats what we are eating.  He always gets a veggie first with his milk, while the main dish is cooling of.  And then he usually devours the main dish, then fruit at the end of the meal.  Last night we had stew.  He isn't a huge fan of it, so he ate his peas first, had a couple bites of stew and then refused any more, so I gave him half of a banana.  As long as he ate part of the meal, I'm happy.

The other night I made Japanese spare ribs with green beans and cheesy potatoes.  He gobbled up his green beans, ate a bit of potato but wouldn't even try the pork ribs...  Since he's typically a great eater and I knew he had a good breakfast & lunch, I wasn't worried about it.

    We do this.

Also, there are always things like yogurt, string cheese, and fresh fruit in the fridge.  I think when she is older the policy will be, "If you don't like what's being served, you can make yourself an alternative, healthy dinner after we eat together."
  • DD is generally a pretty good eater unless someone has given her a snack that has slightly spoiled her appetite and then she will be a little diffcult at dinner.   We keep green beans and mashed potates on hand if she really won't eat any dinner, she has never turned down green beans.   Also, the veggies/mashed potatoes are used for her lunch so we have some food in the fridge for her already.   I try to make pretty balanced meals so there is usually food she will eat.

  • Yogurt is a pretty good standby for us, but mostly I feel like if he isn't eating, he isn't hungry.  I'm not a two meal mama either.

  • Thanks great tips! I'm not tough enough to not give them anything yet!
  • Breakfast: toast and an egg or yogurt and a banana. It's pretty simple and she gobbles it down (fingers crossed it doesn't change now that I have typed that.)
